It’s Veterans Day — “Several city offices will close [today] in observance of the holiday, while veterans and the Alexandria community are welcome to participate in some local ceremonies and events. The Friends of Rocky Versace will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 1 p.m. inside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center at 2701 Commonwealth Avenue.” [ALXnow]

Minnie Howard Closed for Repairs —The main pool is closed until further notice pending repairs. The warm water training pool will have offer extended hours with limited capacity on these dates: Monday, Nov. 10 from 4-8:45 p.m.; Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 4-6:20 p.m. and 7:20-8:45 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 14 from 4-8:45 p.m.” [City of Alexandria]

Freedom House Museum reopens after exterior renovations restore pre-Civil War appearance

The Freedom House Museum reopened last Thursday following over a year of exterior renovations to restore the building’s pre-Civil War facade.

Alexandria leaders cut the ribbon on the renovations during a ceremony Saturday afternoon, where Mayor Alyia Gaskins said the museum — formerly a site where slave traders trafficked tens of thousands of enslaved peoples — serves as a declaration that the city will not forget its history.

APD investigating after suspects steal cash register from West End convenience store

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that took place at a convenience store this morning (Monday) in the West End.

APD responded to a store at the 1600 block of N. Quaker Lane just after 5 a.m., after a clerk reported that two men in ski masks and black clothing entered the store, pointed handguns at the clerk and “took the cash register,” according to dispatch reports.

ACHS student journalists earn statewide awards as school board to review publication policy

It’s been a lively year for the student journalists of Alexandria City High School newspaper Theogony, who were recently named some of the best in the state.

Just months after Theogony staff made national headlines for their enterprising Voices Unbound campaign, the student newspaper was one of five in Virginia to win top-ranking “Trophy Class” honors from the Virginia High School League. Former co-editor James Libresco, who spearheaded the anti-censorship campaign, was also named Virginia’s Student Journalist of the Year.

Campagna Center’s new CEO aims to lead the nonprofit with empathy

Even though she started work this past summer, Campagna Center CEO Edith Hawkins is still moving into her office.

Hawkins succeeded the nonprofit’s former CEO of 13 years, Tammy Mann, in June. The mother of three commutes twice a week, sometimes more, from Bowie, Maryland, to the educational and social development nonprofit’s headquarters at 418 S. Washington Street in Old Town, where she told ALXnow that needs are growing.

Senate passes deal to reopen government, but hurdles remain for health care funding

A legislative package to end the government shutdown appears on track Monday after a handful of Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to break the impasse in what has become a deepening disruption of federal programs and services, the longest in history.

What's in and out of the bipartisan deal drew sharp criticism and leaves few senators fully satisfied. The legislation provides funding to reopen the government, including for SNAP food aid and other programs, while also ensuring backpay for furloughed federal workers the Trump administration had left in doubt.

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 10, 1900, the Alexandria Golf Club, located on Shuter’s Hill, hosted its first tournament. Golf course designer Robert White of Cincinnati had laid out the links that fall, and the following year a clubhouse was built. Entrance fees at the nine-hole course were $5 for men and $3 for women.” [Historic Alexandria]

Reminder: Old Town Road Closures — “Alexandria will temporarily shut down the streets surrounding City Hall on Monday as part of preparations for the City Hall Renovation Project. N. Royal Street will close to traffic between Cameron Street and King Street from 7 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13. Parking will also be prohibited on that section of road from Nov. 13-20.” [ALXnow]

Police: Man arrested over robbery near Potomac Yard this afternoon

The Alexandria Police Department has detained a suspect over a robbery that took place this afternoon (Friday) near Potomac Yard.

Police were alerted shortly after 2:30 p.m. that a male suspect in a black ski mask had reportedly walked into a battery store on the 400 block of E. Glebe Road and demanded cash. The suspect had his hands in his pockets, and “a weapon was implied but not seen,” an APD dispatcher said.

Sen. Ebbin scores victory as his transit-funding panel sends its plan to legislature

For Sen. Adam Ebbin, the task of securing dedicated revenue streams for Northern Virginia transit is now 50% complete, as the region’s transit subcommittee approved a new spending package proposal this week.

In conversations with the Northern Virginia Growing Needs of Public Transit Joint Subcommittee, Ebbin (D-39) successfully shepherded near-unanimous support for the package, which calls for $400 million annually in new spending.
