Monte Durham outside his new salon in Old Town (staff photo by James Cullum)

Monte Durham says he’s ready to go back to television, but it could mean an end to his days cutting hair.

It’s been more than two years since Durham opened Salon Monte (210 S. Union Street), and during that time he’s worked to jumpstart a new show. Earlier plans to film a reality show in the salon didn’t pan out, he says, but that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing more opportunities.

“I’ve been approached by a production company out of the U.K.,” Durham said. “From the conversations I’ve been having, I would go back to wedding consulting.”

The former co-host of “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta,” Durham was filming “Say Yes to the Prom” in New York City when the pandemic struck in March 2020. With an expired contract and the network having gone temporarily dark, he went back to his roots as a hair stylist and opened the salon in September 2020. It’s been a serious commitment of time, energy and resources. After all, with his business named Salon Monte, everyone wants him to cut their hair.

“I call them one-hit wonders,” Durham says. “Folks will buy their wife or relative the gift of having me cut their hair, and we have five fabulous stylists, so if they want to save 30% with another stylist, I encourage them to do that.”

Durham, 65, lives with his husband in Belle Haven, and says he’s in the salon nearly every day.

“It’s different [from] traveling and staying in nice hotels, hanging out and meeting great people on red carpets,” he said. “The salon has been very good for me.”

He says both his parents died in quick succession — with his father dying less than two weeks before the salon opened.

“It kept me driven and kept me from wallowing in my sorrows,” Durham said. “We started out new. Everything was new:  the towels, the faucets, the flooring, the ceiling, the lighting. In that chaos of the world shutting down around us, here we were with this little gem in the heart of Old Town.”

If it works out and Durham does get back on TV, he says that the salon will stay open.

“Our biggest accomplishment has been consistency,” Durham said. “I have set some things in motion, and I feel confident that we can do it. I have great bookkeeping support, ordering support and excellent staff.”

Deli News & More at 1406 King Street is closed (staff photo by James Cullum)

Updated 4:15 p.m. — After nearly 30 years in Old Town, Deli News & More closed last month for the last time.

The 7,800-square-foot space at 1406 King Street has since been leased to Ed McIntosh, one of the founders of Chop Shop Taco (1008 Madison Street). The shop will remain a convenience store, and it will be reopen in March as Eddie’s Little Shop and Deli.

“We will be specializing in prime rib sandwiches and handmade mozzarella along with a few other highlights,” McIntosh said.

The former owner of Deli News & More left a note of thanks on the front door of the business.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of this community,” owner Jong Suk Choi wrote. “Thank you for letting us serve you and please be well.”

Deli News & More opened as a newsstand in 1994, and served light breakfast fare, sandwiches and more. The “more” got the convenience store into trouble, prompting a City Council action approving the sale of alcohol on the premises in 2019.

Twelve-year-old bonded canine sisters Sophie and Joey are looking for a new home in Alexandria, and their adoption fees are covered.

Their previous owner can’t take care of the dogs any more, and the pair have spent their entire lives together.

“Even on the first day they came to us, you could tell that they didn’t want to be apart, not even for a moment,” said Elena Carver, the AWLA’s Veterinary & Foster Care Manager. “But when they were together, they completely opened up. Suddenly this new place wasn’t as scary to them.”

The AWLA wants to help every animal find a loving home this holiday season. In the case of Joey and Sophie, that home needs to be big enough for two charming senior canines. That’s why, as part of the AWLA’s Home for the Pawlidays event, running through the end of December, adoption fees have been paid by Priority Automotive for all adult animals, including Sophie and Joey.

“Every animal deserves a loving family, regardless of their age,” said AWLA Executive Director Stella Hanly. “Sophie and Joey have given so much love in their lives and they have so much more to give.”

Joey and Sophie are available for adoption or for temporary foster. To schedule time to meet them for adoption, email [email protected]. To learn more about providing them with a shelter break by fostering them in your home, email [email protected].

A new free magazine is coming to Del Ray, and everybody is going to get it.

Since May, Brett Kitchen has been working to launch Greet Del Ray, a franchise magazine with positive local feature stories that he will be delivering to more than 6,000 homes in the neighborhood every month.

The first issue will be delivered to mailboxes in early February, Kitchen told ALXnow.

“I’ve always kind of toyed with the idea of having a magazine, but never really followed through on it,” Kitchen said. “A friend of mine, a realtor, does a version of Greet in Cleveland Park in D.C., and she showed me the finished product and how you know they train you, and you don’t have to put up any investment upfront. All it takes is time getting your sponsorships sold in order to build up enough revenue to create a magazine.”

There are more than 30 Greet magazines in communities throughout the country, including Delray Beach, Florida. This will be the first Greet in Virginia. There are also more than 500 smaller Stroll magazine franchises around the country, with the nearest located in Falls Church.

“I hope to grow this to be a 48-page publication every month,” Kitchen said. “I don’t think people would read anything bigger than that.”

Kitchen lives in D.C., and has worked in public relations in the area for decades. He lately been spending a lot of his time getting new advertisers for the magazine. So far, he’s got dozens of sponsorships from dozens of local businesses, including Pork Barrel BBQ, the Del Ray Business Association, ROAM School of Music, Volunteer Alexandria and Del Ray Pizzeria.

“I do sales presentations, you know, being able to meet total strangers, present your product and make them see if they’re interested or not,” he said. ” I have to get the rest of what they call residual profit of $3,000 a month or the parent company won’t let me go to print. The ad contracts are for a minimum one year at a time, and the maximum is three years. Most of my clients have signed on for three years. I just hit my $3,000 mark.”

Kitchen is looking to find freelance contributors to the magazine.

“My impression is this a very cohesive community,” he said. “The groundswell of support I received from the business owners is incredible, especially from Bill Blackburn, Lauren Fisher, Pat Miller and Gayle Reuter. And anytime I talk to a resident, everybody’s been very receptive to the idea of what is going to feature and they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, this would be great for the neighborhood.’ It’s a very happy, friendly place.”
