Hypergoat Coffee Roasters, an Alexandria-founded coffee shop, is planning a second location in Del Ray.
Co-owner and head roaster Rodrigo Ramos confirmed to ALXnow the second Hypergoat location is in the works. The 3,051-square-foot location at 2423B Mount Vernon Avenue and the adjacent, vacant 2423A Mount Vernon Avenue used to be home to First Agape Baptist Community of Faith and were converted into two tenant spaces.
According to Ramos, the coffee shop is in the early buildout phase, and there is no estimated opening date yet.
The coffee company is owned by Ramos and his wife, Deborah Joos, who have lived in Alexandria since 2018. The pair started the business as an online and farmers market operation before launching a brick-and-mortar Hypergoat Coffee Roasters cafe at 215 N. Payne Street in August 2024.
Ramos said there is a personal connection for him and his wife in Del Ray.
“We’ve always loved walking along Mt. Vernon Ave with our kids, and we’ve even had a Hypergoat stand at a few of the Vintage & Flea markets in Del Ray over the years,” Ramos said. “So when the opportunity came up to have a space right there, it felt like a really natural fit for us.”
The coffee shop roasts its own coffee and focuses on sustainably and ethically sourced coffee. Its 215 N. Payne Street location in Old Town has a range of coffees and teas, as well as pastries and toasts.
According to the business, the name “Hypergoat” refers to the Ethiopian legend of Kaldi, a goatherd believed to have discovered coffee after his goats became “hyper” from eating cherries from a certain tree.
The coffee shop is celebrating its two-year anniversary Saturday (Aug. 22) at its 215 N. Payne Street location. Hypergoat will have a birthday cake cutting at 12 p.m., live music from Brazilian artist Matheus Fonseca starting at 12:15 p.m., and free ice cream from Fabled Ice Cream for the first 100 guests at 12:15 p.m. The shop is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
