Alexandria City Public Schools said school bus routes may be changing and students may be arriving at school late due to a shortage of bus drivers.

In a letter out to parents, MeChale’ Johnson, director of pupil transportation and fleet management, said ACPS is struggling to fill vacancies in transportation services and it will have an impact on students at the start of the 2024-2025 school year next Monday.

Car wash chain Mr Wash is offering free car washes tomorrow (Thursday) to celebrate the back-to-school season.

A release noted that customers don’t need to do anything but visit the car wash to participate. The deal is open to anyone, a change from the similar deal last year offered only to teachers, administrators and school faculty.

A massive outdoor celebration of international food is making its return for its eighth year to Old Town’s Oronoco Bay Park next week.

Around the World Cultural Food Festival, the largest outdoor cultural food festival in the region, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. in Oronoco Bay Park.

Interim Alexandria Police Chief Raul Pedroso shared a few more details about the fatal shooting by an Alexandria Police Officer this morning, though many other details are being kept under wraps.

Pedroso said officers pleaded with the man to drop his weapon for around 35 minutes, but around 11:21 p.m. last night (Monday), in “response to threatening action” an APD officer shot and killed the man. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

A group of Alexandria runners from the Old Town Run Club will be making a four-day trip from the Pentagon up to New York City next month to commemorate 9/11.

In a release, the club said the plan is to depart on the morning of Sept. 8 with a military send off and reading at the Pentagon.

A little over 1,000 apartments are opening in Alexandria this year, trailing behind D.C. and Arlington as the third most new apartments for any locality in the region.

Apartment search site RentCafe ran the numbers on new apartments opening in 2024 around the region. In a report, RentCafe said the region is on track to open 15,079 new rental units in 2024.

The badly cracked and damaged tennis courts at Potomac Yard Park are being closed for repairs starting on Friday, Aug. 16.

The two tennis courts in the park are in rough shape, with ruptures running the length of the asphalt. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities said in a release that the courts will be closed from Friday, Aug. 16, through Saturday, Aug. 31, for repairs.

The City of Alexandria is celebrating the ten year anniversary of the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial (1001 S. Washington Street) next month, a monument commemorating a chapter in Alexandria’s history that’s both harrowing and inspiring.

The memorial honors the hundreds of Black Americans who died in Alexandria during the Civil War.
