This month kicks off a major downsizing at the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) in the Carlyle neighborhood.

A new report from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) put the exact amount of office space the PTO is shedding at 764k square feet.

The PTO is scheduled to finish downsizing by the end of next week.

The OMB report said the Department of Commerce has been conducting space studies prior to lease renewal or acquisition to include an assessment of teleworking patterns.

The report said the PTO downsizing comprises the majority of the 1.06 million square feet in office space the General Services Administration is eliminating over the next few years.

The report says:

GSA occupancy agreement space has significantly reduced from 8.65M SF in 2021 to 7.46M SF in 2023 reflecting a decline of 13.75% overall and 15.10% in office-specific space. Over 1.06M SF of additional GSA occupancy agreement space (office and warehouse) is targeted for disposal in the next several years, the largest of which is a portion of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Alexandria, VA campus at 764K SF.

News of the planned downsizing broke two years ago. It was followed quickly by news that The Motley Fool just up the street would also be downsizing, proving to be a major headache for building owners in the Carlyle neighborhood.
