APD: Officers fatally shot armed man in apartment building near Hammond Middle School

The Alexandria Police Department said in a release that on Monday, Aug. 12, officers fatally shot a man in a stairwell of an apartment building just off I-395.

According to the release:

On August 12, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Alexandria Police officers responded to 5101 Maris Ave. for a call for service. Upon arrival at the building, officers were met in the stairwell by a subject armed with a firearm. The encounter resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The subject was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The investigation is being conducted by the regional Critical Incident Response Team.

There are no reports of any other injuries related to the incident.

This is an ongoing investigation. Further updates will be made available as the investigation progresses.

According to the scanner, the incident started with a call that a person in the building was armed and suicidal. Shots fired were reported on the scanner around 11:21 p.m.
