George Washington ‘High School’ to get new marker detailing its New Deal and desegregation history

Today, George Washington is one of the city’s two public middle schools, but the building’s history as white-only high school and the process of desegregation is being told in a new historical marker.

The George Washington High School Alumni Association is planning a dedication of the Virginia Historical Marker in front of the school on Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m, according to the Office of Historic Alexandria.

Burke & Herbert Bank announces ‘consolidating’ move to Fairfax office

Burke & Herbert Bank has been an iconic institution in Alexandria since 1852, but the financial institution has been cozying up to the city’s southern neighbor with a new centralized office.

Similar to how the city is consolidating its services in a new West End facility, Alexandria’s Burke & Herbert Bank is planning to centralize just south of the border with Fairfax.

Alexandria planning more community discussions for plans to light athletic fields

The City of Alexandria is planning to host a meeting later this month to discuss plans to light athletic fields around the city.

The idea behind adding lighting is to provide additional capacity to accommodate an increasing strain on the city’s fields. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue).

Ted’s Bulletin coming to Carlyle Neighborhood near Wegman’s

Americana restaurant Ted’s Bulletin and the off-shot Sidekick Bakery are coming to the Carlyle Crossing’s development in the eponymous Carlyle neighborhood, Washington Business Journal first reported.

Carlyle Crossing is a mixed-use development near the Eisenhower Metro station anchored by a Wegmans Food Market that opened in May. The Alexandria location will be the seventh Ted’s Bulletin in the region, with other locations in nearby Merrifield and Ballston Quarter.

Parks department hopes to net new athletic structures for park off Eisenhower Avenue

Plans for the revitalization of Joseph Hensley Park (4200 Eisenhower Avenue) are headed to review at the Planning Commission and could see new field nets added to the popular athletic fields.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) is requesting three 20-foot tall netting and fencing structures, with two backdrop structures along the first and third baselines of the two diamond ballfields and another netting structure along the east side of the rectangular field.

Stracci Pizza in Del Ray to expand with new outdoor seating

Stracci Pizza (106 Hume Avenue) in Del Ray could be getting an outdoors expansion with a new suite of seats and space for a trailer.

A permit to expand outdoor seating and add an outdoor trailer is scheduled for review at a Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Former mayoral candidate Annetta Catchings elected chair of Alexandria Republican Party

One year after her race against incumbent Mayor Justin Wilson, Annetta Catchings has been elected chair of the Alexandria Republican City Committee (ARCC).

A release from ARCC noted that Catchings is the first black woman elected to the position in ARCC.

Poll: What do you think of the GenOn Power Plant redevelopment plans?

Earlier this week, Alexandria’s City Council approved two major steps forward for plans to redevelop an abandoned power plant at the north end of Old Town’s waterfront.

The project faced some pushback from tenants and worker unions and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), but ultimately the city voted to approve a master plan amendment for the site and a coordinated development district (CDD) to encompass the project. The master plan amendment was unanimously approved, but the CDD was approved in a 6-1 vote with Council Member Alyia Gaskins voting against it.

Police: One victim injured after Braddock neighborhood shooting

(Updated at 4 p.m. on July 9) Alexandria Police are investigating a shots fired incident in the Braddock neighborhood last night that left a man hospitalized.

The incident occurred sometime after 9 p.m. last night (Tuesday). Police said a man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
