The Alexandria Police Department released the identities of the dead victim and suspect in Saturday’s shooting at the Onelife Fitness (305 Hooffs Run Drive) in Carlyle. APD said that the suspect and the victim were “known to each other.”

According to dispatch, the shooting occurred inside the Onelife Fitness at around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.

It’s the season for fireworks, but not in Alexandria.

With the Fourth of July and the City’s birthday celebration (July 13) right around the corner, the Alexandria Fire Department sent out a reminder this week that fireworks are illegal.

After a construction delay, Pupatella Neapolitan Pizza is still planning to open in Old Town North before the end of this year, the company tells ALXnow.

Construction started and then stopped at the building at 700 Slaters Lane, and will resume again in the next few weeks, according to Natasha Neely, a vice president for marketing for the company. Neely did not comment on the delay.

The head of school and academic principal at Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 School are returning to work after four months of forced leave after an autistic four-year-old student walked away from the school and was found walking barefoot in the middle of the street near the King St. Metro station.

In a letter this week to Jefferson-Houston parents and staff, head of school John McCain thanked administrators PreeAnn Johnson and Julia Neufer for “serving as the acting leadership team and providing consistency for our community.”

Alexandria Little League’s All-Star Intermediate baseball players are heading to the Intermediate Baseball State Tournament, and they won’t have to travel far.

Eight teams of 13-and-under players from across Virginia will participate in the tournament, which will be held at Alexandria’s Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

Three years after being established by City Council, Alexandria’s Independent Community Policing Review Board is still not up and running. Now after another delay, the board will have to postpone investigating hundreds of allegations of police misconduct until at least the fall.

City Council will consider a lease agreement tonight to move a portion of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services to a 5,600-square-foot office space at AlexRenew Headquarters.

Alexandria City Manager Jim Parajon is recommending that City Council not sell a tiny parcel of land at 2 King Street on the Alexandria waterfront.

Last year, the city issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the 1,825-square-foot property between Waterfront Park and The Strand Street. The city received two responses from the RFP, and since then Parajon’s office and the city’s Real Estate Committee came to the conclusion that it should cancel solicitation of the project until the waterfront mitigation project is completed.

Noah Lyles is heading to Paris. After winning his final 100 meters at the Olympic trials on Saturday with a time of 9.83 seconds, the Alexandria native and world champion sprinter is heading to his second consecutive Olympic games.

Lyles ran a personal best in the race.
