BREAKING: ACPS closed Monday as plans shift to synchronous learning

Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed tomorrow (Monday), with students participating in synchronous learning, the school system announced tonight.

ACPS made the decision around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, shifting gears from previous plans to open with a two-hour delay due to the ongoing snow. All schools and offices will be closed, with students participating in synchronous learning and staff following a virtual workday.

“Class times will include live instruction via Zoom, along with independent work,” according to ACPS. “Teachers will also provide virtual office hours. Please check your student’s Canvas or Clever account no later than 8 a.m. for details about your child’s schedule.”

Student attendance will also be taken via Canvas or Clever. Essential personnel are still required to report to work if it is safe to do so.

More details about synchronous learning are available on the ACPS website.

As of 8:45 p.m. Sunday, the City of Alexandria plans to open tomorrow, with normal schedules for refuse, recycling, yard waste and curbside food collection.

The D.C. area remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 a.m. tomorrow. According to the latest National Weather Service forecast, the area could receive between 3 and 5 inches of snowfall accumulation overnight. Snow is possible Monday, “mainly before 1 p.m.,” with a 40% chance of precipitation and wind gusts as high as 37 mph.

In Alexandria, crews are working 12-hour shifts to treat and clear streets, according to the city website. Operations will continue around the clock “until conditions improve and travel is safe.” Road conditions can be monitored by calling 511.

Additionally, the city’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will continue to operate during regular hours (7 p.m. to 7 a.m., nightly).
