DEVELOPING: Alexandria preparing for Sunday storm as NWS issues Winter Weather Advisory

Between 2 and 4 inches of snowfall are expected to fall over Alexandria tomorrow (Sunday), according to a new Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service this afternoon.

A mix of rain and snow are expected during the day Sunday, which could transition into full snowfall after 10 p.m., according to the latest NWS forecast. The new advisory tells D.C.-area residents to “plan on slippery road conditions.” It will be in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Monday, potentially affecting commutes.

As of 7:15 p.m. Saturday, the City of Alexandria is planning to deploy crews early Sunday morning who will work in 12-hour shifts to treat and clear streets. Operations are expected to continue around the clock “until conditions improve and travel is safe,” the city said in a new announcement.

“We ask residents to stay safe and limit travel once inclement weather begins – not only does it keep you safe, but it allows crews to perform snow and ice removal work safely and efficiently,” the city said.

On Friday, the city said “staff are rested, prepared, and actively monitoring the situation – we’re ready to respond if needed to any and all conditions.” Response preparations have already begun, Mayor Alyia Gaskins said in a video update earlier today.

“We’ve started mobilizing our trucks and equipment and making sure that they’re ready to go,” Gaskins said. “We’ve started mapping out priority roads so that we can begin to issue treatment, should the conditions warrant it.”

Several contractors are also on standby for additional resources, she said, and the city is “continuing to ramp up our communications and our systems for getting in touch with you, with our contractors and communicating across the region.”

Since forecasts this week have predicted both rain and snow, it’s possible that trucks will not be deployed to pre-treat roadways, according to Friday’s announcement. This is because treatments like brine are ineffective when washed away.

The city has advised residents to keep vehicles off of streets to provide room for crews to remove snow.

More information from the city is available, below.

If you have a driveway, please use it. Keeping vehicles off the street gives crews the room to safely and efficiently clear roads if conditions change.

Residents can also sign up with Volunteer Alexandria’s Snow Buddy program to help neighbors clear sidewalks and driveways who may be unable to complete cleanup work themselves.
