Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark breaks ground

Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark broke ground today, marking a momentous occasion for the city’s West End.

When completed, the 1.1 million square-foot project at the former Landmark Mall (just off Interstate 395 at Duke Street) will include a 569,000 square-foot hospital center with 192 beds, a 111,000 square-foot cancer center, an 83,000 square-foot specialty care center and a retrofitted 550-space parking garage. A 1,488-space below-grade parking garage is also planned with at least 19 parking spaces set aside for electric vehicle charging.

Mayor Justin Wilson said that the development will provide an “incredible community service for generations.”

“In a city that is 15-and-a-half square miles, if you look around, you see how important this site is going to be to the future,” Wilson said. “Not just to make an amazing hospital with some of incredible architecture, development, sustainability, everything that we expect to provide, world-class services to the community, but also as a catalyst for economic development.”

City Council unanimously approved the project last year, and Inova wants construction of the four-building hospital campus finished by 2028.

Inova Alexandria Hospital opened 151 years ago, and is the longest-serving hospital in Virginia. The current hospital building at 4320 Seminary Road opened in 1962.

Inova Alexandria Hospital President Dr. Rina Bansal said that it’s taken more than a decade for the hospital system to get to this point.

“This new facility will not only meet the needs of our growing community, but will enhance our team members’ ability to deliver care to advanced technologies and expanded services,” Bansal said.

This was the second groundbreaking today for Inova, following a similar event for construction of Inova Franconia-Springfield Hospital in Fairfax County.

That project, along with the Oakville Triangle development near Potomac Yard and Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark represent a three-tiered approach to health care in Inova’s eastern region, CEO J. Stephen Jones said.

“Building Inova’s investment in the Eastern Region is substantial, not only financially, but also with the impact that these projects will have for the people in these communities for decades to come,” Jones said.
