The developer behind plans to build a five-story, 142-space automated parking garage and a 16-unit mixed-use apartment building with ground floor retail in Old Town is asking the city for an extension.

Galena Capital Partners says that its plans to build the project were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a legal dispute that was settled with a neighbor, new staffing in the city and more. The project was approved in 2022, and the development special use permit approvals expire in July.

A proposal for a new French bakery in Old Town will be submitted to the Board of Architectural Review on Wednesday (May 7).

Arlington-based Eclairons Pastry and Coffee House wants to open at the old Firehook Bakery at 430 S. Washington Street. The location was Shuman’s Bakery for more than 30 years before Firehook Bakery took over in 2004.

An administrative special use permit was filed to open Kingsley Cafe on the first floor of 910 King Street. Submitted plans show an extensive interior renovation of the 900-square-foot townhouse built in 1900.

ALX Community in Old Town is launching a free career recovery program this month for federal employees the Trump administration has laid off.

The Career Catalyst programs will be held on Thursday nights, starting April 24 and running until May 15, at ALX Community’s office at 277 S. Washington Street. They include a series of networking mixers and meetups to help with job strategy, resume and cover letter writing, interviews, offers, and salary negotiation.

A sweeping plan to redevelop two popular parks on the Alexandria waterfront is heading into the city review process.

Waterfront Park (1 Prince Street) and Point Lumley Park (1 Duke Street) in Old Town flood frequently. The city wants to close both parks from the fall of 2026 until the fall of 2028 to rebuild segments of the sea wall and install a pumping station to recirculate floodwaters back to the Potomac River.

San Francisco-based Kasa Living, Inc. filed paperwork with the city last month to take over ownership of the Sonder, a Marriott Bonvoy 15-room apartment hotel at 805 King Street.

Akeno Sushi Bar wants to open before the end of the year at 611 King Street in Old Town, but it has to get a few paperwork issues squared away with the City of Alexandria to make that possible.

The interior renovation of the former home to Java Grill hasn’t started, as the local business is asking the city for an allowance to install a new HVAC system on the roof without a mechanical screen. The proposal going to the Planning Commission on Wednesday (April 16) would replace two HVAC units, add a third unit, and install an exhaust fan.

Update (April 12: 1:42 pm): The Alexandria Police Department announced on Saturday (April 12) that the suspect wanted for Friday’s armed robbery of the Stage Door Deli (1324 King Street) in Old Town has been safely apprehended.
