Tops of Old Town owner Sheila Mitchell says her mom tricked her with prosperity.

Sheila is the owner of not only the only hat store in Alexandria (2400 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray), but throughout Northern Virginia. There’s a hat kiosk at the Pentagon City Mall and a Hats In The Belfry in Baltimore, but that’s it for hat stores in this area.

Ethiopian Airlines staff filed a police report Thursday against protestors with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, after coal was dumped inside and outside their office in Del Ray.

Protestors posted “Closed FOR CRUELTY” signs one the business windows and dumped two wheelbarrows of coal in front of the airline’s D.C.-area office at 3133 Mount Vernon Avenue. Some protestors dressed as Santa Claus and Christmas elfs.

There’s a big sale going on at the Bellies & Babies consignment shop in Del Ray, as the store’s last day is on Sunday (Dec. 15).

There’s still plenty of inventory, like kids and maternity clothing, gear, books, and shelving and racks, said store owner Lee Raynes.

More than a dozen Alexandria businesses with skill gaming machines were “put on notice” last month.

The businesses were notified that skill games are illegal gambling machines, and were informed of the legal consequences in a Nov. 19 letter from City Attorney Cheran Ivery, then-Interim Police Chief Raul Pedroso and Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter.

Somebody must have said Beetlejuice’s name too many times, because he was all over the 28th annual Del Ray Halloween Parade on Sunday (Oct. 27).

Thousands of costumed heroes, villains and characters paraded down Mount Vernon Avenue. The weather was crisp — about 60 degrees in the sun, and like an early indication of the days to come felt considerably cooler in the shade.
