TD Bank is moving to a new King Street location in Old Town by 2025.
On Saturday, City Council unanimously approved a special use permit allowing the bank to operate with 37 feet of street frontage at 515 King Street. The decision was previously backed 5-2 by the Planning Commission, which went against a staff recommendation to deny the project.
The former Java Grill space in Old Town could be turned into a sushi restaurant.

An Azerbaijani bakery and cafe has applied for a change of ownership for the former Chewish Deli at 1640 King Street.

The plan is to increase beds on the site from 66 to 90 without any building expansion by shifting to an increased number of “companion rooms” — rooms with two residents. Loren Shook , co-founder of Silverado Memory Care, said that 80% of rooms in most facilities are companion rooms.
The King Street Pedestrian Zone’s expansion to the 200 block opened today in Old Town.
The expansion is currently in a pilot stage. The first phase started today (Nov. 22) and will run through Jan. 6.
Get your walking shoes on, because the Alexandria City Council voted Saturday to shut down the 200 block of King Street this holiday season, as well as next spring and summer.
The unanimous vote was made without discussion, and the closure will happen in two phases. The 200 block will first close from Nov. 22 to Jan. 6, and the second phase is from March 14 to Sept. 30.
