Notes: Arlington man arrested in Alexandria for shooting in Fairfax County

An Arlington man was arrested in Alexandria on Tuesday for a shooting incident that occurred in Bailey’s Crossroads earlier this month, according to FFXnow.

Two women were injured by bullet fragments and debris when the suspect allegedly fired into the floor of the Lion’s Den Lounge at 5820 Seminary Road at around 4 a.m. on July 16.

The Fairfax County Police Department announced that the suspect, 25-year-old Arlington resident Abdulkerim Halid, was arrested Wednesday in Alexandria without incident.

“Two adult females were injured from bullet fragments and debris,” FCPD said. “They were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries not considered to be life-threatening. Halid was identified as the shooter, but he left the scene prior to police arrival.”

Halid was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and is currently in custody without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Maryland man charged for D.C. murders of Alexandria and Bristow men

A 22-year-old Maryland man has been charged with the murders of an Alexandria man in 2022 and a Bristow man in 2021, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

On July 10, police arrested Corde Fitzhugh-Clingman, of Hyattsville, and charged him with two counts of first degree murder while armed for the 2022 death of 26-year-old Zekariya Elmi, of Alexandria, and the 2021 death of 24 year-old Muntsier Sharfi, of Bristow.

MPD offered $25,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in both cases. After his arrest, no information on how Fitzhugh-Clingman allegedly committed the incidents was released by police. Court documents related to his case in D.C. Courts are sealed and no court date has been set.

Elmi was shot in the 5000 block of South Dakota Avenue, Northeast, at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2022. He reportedly crashed his car into a utility pole after the incident and he later died at the hospital.

Sarfi, a football player and 2020 graduate of the University of Virginia College at Wise, was found shot to death at around 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2021, in an overturned vehicle in the 3300 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast. Police found that he was shot a block away in the 3300 block of Eerie Street, Southeast.

Man shot Friday night near Braddock Road Metro station

A 56-year-old man was shot multiple times last night a block away from the Braddock Road Metro station, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The victim was shot in the back multiple times at around 11:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Madison Street, according to scanner traffic. The victim was transported to the hospital and his condition is unknown.

No information on suspects was released to the public. Multiple shots fired incidents have recently occurred on the same block as Friday night’s incident.

Police: Argument at Alexandria City High School led to teens shooting each other

(Updated 4:20 p.m.) The two teens who allegedly shot each other on May 31 in the Seminary Valley neighborhood got into a fight earlier that day at Alexandria City High School, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

The teens allegedly shot each other at around 8:15 p.m. in a residential area near Interstate 395 and N. Van Dorn Street. The Alexandria Police Department received multiple calls reporting 15-20 gunshots in a residential area in the 5400 block of Richenbacher Avenue.

The teens, ages 16 and 17 were both shot in the lower body and were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No charges have been filed against either teen and the incident remains under investigation, according to police.

An Instagram story was posted about an hour after the incident by an Alexandria City High School student described as “an involved party” in the search warrant affidavit.

One of the injured juveniles was captured on camera carrying a weapon and the other was arrested with a plastic bag with four firearm magazines, according to the search warrant affidavit.

“The Instagram story stated ‘dat glick jammed up only reason he livin,'” police said in the search warrant affidavit. “An Alexandria City High School student was identified as being the subject involved in an altercation with (the victim) at school the day of the shooting.”

One of the students who was shot is suspected for being involved in a shooting at the Bradlee Shopping Center on April 17, according to the search warrant affidavit.

Police: No injuries after shots fired Sunday night in West End

No one was reported injured after multiple shots were reported in a West End residential neighborhood on Sunday night.

The Alexandria Police Department got multiple calls for five-to-six gunshots in the 1400 block of N. Beauregard Street at around 7:30 p.m. The incident occurred in a residential area near Dora Kelley Nature Center and William Ramsay Elementary School.

Callers told APD that they saw a man shooting at a gray sedan driving in the area, and at least one round struck an apartment, according to scanner traffic.

The shots fired occurred on the same block where, last year, Enoc Cruz Villafuerte murdered his brother Jonathan Cruz Villafuerte.

Man shot in West End early Sunday morning

A man was shot in the West End early Sunday morning, and walked into a 7-Eleven on Lincolnia Road for help.

The incident occurred at around 1:45 a.m. in the 200 block of N. Breckinridge Place, and the victim walked less than a quarter mile to get help at the 7-Eleven at 6120 Lincolnia Road, according to dispatch reports. The victim suffered a non-life threatening injury.

The incident remains under investigation and no arrests have been made, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Two injured after more than a dozen shots fired on Richenbacher Avenue

(Updated 2:40 p.m.) Police said two teens were shot in a residential area near Interstate 395 and N. Van Dorn Street on Wednesday night.

Alexandria Police Department received multiple calls at around 8:15 p.m. reporting 15-20 gunshots in a residential area in the 5400 block of Richenbacher Avenue, which is near N. Van Dorn Street and Interstate 395.

One of the victims, a 17-year-old male, was shot in the lower body. The second victim was a 16-year-old male. Both victims were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses told police that two suspects were seen jumping into a red and white Mini Cooper and fleeing the area.

Police reported via dispatch that multiple shell casings from a rifle were found at the scene.

No arrests have been made in connection with this incident, according to APD.

No arrest after shots fired and blood trail leads into West End hotel

Alexandria Police say that no arrests were made or injuries reported after multiple shots were fired outside a West End hotel late last month.

APD responded at around 9:30 a.m. to the 6200 block of Duke Street for a report of shots fired, and found two bullet casings in the middle of the parking lot, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

Police then followed a blood trail to the Days Inn next door to a room on the second floor of the Days Inn by Wyndham Alexandria (110 S. Bragg Street West), where they found more blood, nine rounds of ammunition, a bottle of Johnny Walker whiskey and cigarette butts, according to the search warrant.

Police interviewed a hotel guest staying below the room, who reported that he’d heard a pop earlier in the day but as it was raining dismissed the sound as transformer.

It’s been a busy week in Alexandria.

City Council unanimously approved City Manager Jim Parajon’s $884.3 million fiscal year 2024 budget, funding citywide pay increases, a fully funded school system and collective bargaining agreements with the police and fire departments.

On Thursday night, the School Board announced that Interim Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt has been promoted to superintendent. Kay-Wyatt has led Alexandria’s 16,000 student-strong school system since the beginning of this school year after the resignation of Superintendent Gregory Hutchings, Jr. So far, she’s managed ACPS through post-pandemic educational issues, an increase in juvenile crime and the ACPS budget process. Her four-year contract ends on June 30, 2027, and her annual salary is $265,000.

Much of the week was punctuated by crime incidents, including a gunfire incidents in Landmark, an attempted carjacking on Duke Street and another shots fired incident near the Braddock Road Metro station.

More gunfire was reported near the Braddock Road Metro station yesterday afternoon, prompting the Alexandria Police Department to tweet that it’s “determined” to solve recent crime issues.

“APD has taken action by installing cameras and increasing police presence in the area to ensure everyone’s safety,” APD tweeted. “No one has been hurt, but we’re determined to prevent any potential harm by keeping a police presence there until we resolve this violence.”

Thursday’s incident occurred in the same block as a number of recent shootings. The city is experiencing a crime surge, and police are fighting it by increasing patrols in high-crime areas, installing mobile camera units and hosting community events.
