After road work on I-395 was rescheduled from this weekend, the highway will see closures starting tonight.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said several lanes of I-395 between Edsall Road and Duke Street are rescheduled to close between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. tonight through Thursday night.
Drivers along Duke Street in the West End should expect lane closures starting tonight and continuing intermittently through Friday, June 24.
The closures are connected to work on the Duke Street bridge over I-395 near Lincolnia. Planned improvements for the bridge include replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, upgrading the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path and widening the eastbound sidewalk.
Updated 10:45 p.m. — The question should read “increased car travel time” rather than reduced.
Alexandria is in the process of planning an overhaul to Duke Street, and while part of the project goal is improved transit
Alexandria Police are still investigating a February 22 crash on Duke Street that resulted in the death of a driver and multiple injuries. No one has been arrested in connection to the crash, even though one of the drivers involved was found to be in possession of cocaine and number of other suspected drugs.
“The crash resulted in one fatality, one critical injury, one serious injury, and two minor injuries,” APD said in a release. “Preliminary investigation suggests speed may have been a contributing factor in this incident.”
A Fairfax County man was charged was charged with driving under the influence and assault and battery after allegedly abandoning his car in the middle of the 3500 block of Duke Street and running away on foot.
The 32-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly assaulting a person after he ran east on Duke Street at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. Police were initially called because his vehicle was sitting in the road and blocking the driveway of the McDonald’s at Duke Street and Wheeler Avenue, which is next door to Alexandria Police Headquarters at 3600 Wheeler Avenue.
A new group is being tasked with heading up the city’s plans to overhaul Duke Street.
The Duke Street In Motion Advisory Group is tasked with guiding the new eponymous Duke Street In Motion project — which aims to make adjust the arterial road to emphasize public transit, make improvements to bicycle/pedestrian safety and other changes.
After more than 10 years in development, the high-capacity Duke Street Transitway is getting the show on the road.
The Alexandria City Council, at its meeting March 8, will vote on authorizing the city manager to appoint an Ad Hoc Duke Street Transitway Advisory Group. The nine-person body will spend the next year providing recommendations for corridor design alternatives, and will endorse a preferred alternative by spring 2023.
Drivers headed east on Duke Street in the West End tomorrow (Wednesday) be warned: lane closures could slow traffic on the major arterial road.
The right lane of eastbound Duke Street will be closed, followed by the left lane, to install temporary striping for a planned traffic shift to accommodate the Duke Street bridge rehabilitation project. The closures will run from Oasis Drive in Lincolnia to South Walker Street outside of the development-formerly-known-as-Landmark.

Rescue personnel are on scene of a multi-vehicle crash that sent at least three to trauma centers with serious injuries.
