The Del Ray Business Association is warning the community against a phishing scam that has potential victims receiving emails from DRCA President Sue Kovalsky.

“Some of our members received targeted emails posing as Del Ray Business Association President Sue Kovalsky, requesting eBay, Target, or Macy’s gift cards to donate to veterans affected by COVID-19,” according to DRCA. “While the email appears to be from Sue, the email address was not hers.”

A 40-year-old Alexandria man is in jail for alleged cocaine possession and pointing a gun at his neighbor.

Devonte Burgess was arrested at his home in the Mayflower Square apartments in the 5900 block of Quantrell Avenue on the evening of April 8. He was charged with possession of cocaine, weapon possession by a felon and brandishing a weapon.

Alexandria Police have apprehended no suspects after answering a call for shots fired on Saturday night in the 1000 block of Madison Street in Old Town.

Police were called at 10:22 p.m. and found that a building and a vehicle were struck by bullets. They also recovered and a number of spent shell casings from a handgun, Alexandria Police Spokesman Lt. Courtney Ballantine told ALXnow.

A 17-year-old Alexandria male was shot in the upper body on Tuesday evening on a basketball court in the 300 block of Tancil Court in Old Town, according to police.

“We got there and found a male subject with a gunshot wound and he was transported to a local hospital and suffered non-life threatening injuries,” police spokesman Lt. Courtney Ballantine told ALXnow.

A man has been charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing items from a room in the Super 8 Motel at 110 S. Bragg Street on Saturday, March 14.

The victim left her room at 1 p.m. to pay for an additional night at the motel, and afterward left for several hours. When she returned to her room, her valuables were gone. She called police, who found out that a key to the room was mistakenly issued to a new guest at 1:22 p.m., according to a search warrant affidavit.

Virginia State Police have arrested a Danville teen and charged him with obstruction of justice and as an accessory after the fact in the deaths of two people, including an Alexandria resident. last month in Southern Virginia.

The 17-year-old was arrested on Thursday, March 12, by officers with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office.

Two men and a juvenile have been arrested for an armed robbery and carjacking near the Mark Center in the West End last month.

At around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, an Alexandria man and woman were parking his car in the 5500 block of Forrestal Ave. when they were reportedly approached by four males wearing ski masks. According to police, the suspects opened the driver and passenger-side doors, punched the victims multiple times, and threatened to shoot them.

A 59-year-old Alexandria man has been arrested and is in a North Carolina jail for alleged sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl.

John DiGeronimo, an electrical engineer who worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, is accused of dropping off packets of pornography — depicting the the 16-year-old engaging in sexual activity with a much older man in front of her high school — in front of her house and in front of her boyfriend’s house.

Alexandria Police are investigating the theft of nearly $184,000 from the city’s finance department in a suspected phishing scheme.

On Jan. 28, the department made a payment of $183,956.10 to what it believed was Integrity Construction Services, a vendor to Alexandria City Public Schools. The president of the company, Alex Lucas, told police that he is the victim of a phishing attack. The payment was actually sent to an unknown cyberthief.
