The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra Will Reopen in October With Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9

Here’s something to look forward to: When the pandemic is over, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra plans to kick off its next season with Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony No. 9.

That concert is planned for Saturday, October 3, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, but in the meantime, the 85-person orchestra just canceled the remainder of its performances for its 76th season, including on May 16 and 17 and the “Brandenburgs & Brew” concert on June 12.

Alexandria Dedicates $671K in CARES Act Funds to Rent Assistance

The City Council voted on Saturday to direct $671,570 in federal funding to provide rent assistance for low-income families in Alexandria.

The catch, however, is that this funding will be used for rental assistance only for those living in the city’s assisted housing developments, like those managed by Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and including non-profits and set-aside affordable units the city received through the development process.

Inova Providing Drive-By COVID-19 Testing in Alexandria as Hospital is Filling Up

Vehicle-side COVID-19 testing is available at Inova Primary Care – Old Town by appointment only, and the Alexandria Hospital is preparing for a surge of COVID-19 patients.

The clinic at 325 S. Washington Street is operating as a respiratory illness clinic from 1 and 4:30 p.m. during the week by appointment only, and vehicle-side testing appointments are scheduled between 2 and 4 p.m.

One New COVID-19 Death, Cases Jump to 462 in Alexandria

Another Alexandria resident has died from COVID-19, and there are now 462 cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, an increase of 41 cases since yesterday.

There are now 11 fatalities due to the coronavirus in the city. The Alexandria Health Department will not release any information on the fatalities.

Local Shops Offer Custom Monogrammed and Gold Cheetah Print Face Masks

As part of an ongoing series of programs aimed at helping Alexandrians stuck at home, Visit Alexandria has put together a guide to where to find facemasks in the city.

“With the CDC’s recommendations for everyone to wear a cloth face covering while out in public if they can’t maintain six feet of physical distance from others, and the likelihood that this will be the new temporary norm, we’ve compiled a list of Alexandria boutiques and businesses making non-medical-grade face coverings,” the local tourism center said.

ALIVE! Has Another Food Distribution This Saturday and Needs Face Masks

ALIVE! will conduct another food distribution to more than 1,000 families this Saturday, and the nonprofit needs face mask donations for volunteers.

“We received a donation from Yates Dry Cleaning,” ALIVE! Executive Director Jennifer Ayers told ALXnow. “We need more. We tried to order some recently and they’re hard to get. Right now we’re still waiting on them.”

How the Landini Restaurant Empire is Staying Afloat During the Pandemic

Noe Landini’s family has owned establishments in Alexandria since 1979, and they’ve never faced a challenge like this before.

The 39-year-old Landini now spends his days dashing between his numerous businesses, making sure they stay afloat like a row of spinning plates. He’s had to lay off a majority of the company’s 300 employees, closed the locations in D.C. and suspended development on a number of new projects. His company has been approved to receive federal CARES Act funds, although the money is not yet in the bank.
