Alexandria-based nonprofit Campagna Center is excited to announce its 54th annual Taste of Scotland fundraising event on Friday, Dec. 5 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at the ALX Community Atrium. Sponsored by Passport Auto and dozens of other supporters, this beloved holiday tradition marks the official kickoff to Alexandria’s Scottish Christmas Walk Parade, which benefits Campagna’s educational programs that serve more than 2,000 under-resourced children and families each year.
Campagna Center, now in its 80th year, has strengthened Alexandria through education and community engagement. Their programs, including Early Head Start, Head Start, Wright to Read, Campagna Kids, Building Better Futures, and New Neighbors, collectively provide essential resources to local families in need. In the 2024-2025 school year alone, the center supported 2,242 individuals, the majority from households earning between 100% and 200% of the federal poverty level, helping families gain access to a quality education and build a pathway to economic stability.
The holiday season is here, and the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities has a calendar full of events to bring the community together. From tree lightings and concerts to family festivals and teen nights, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as we wrap up the year.

The City of Alexandria will be conducting investigation and testing work on the streets surrounding City Hall from Nov. 13-20.
N. Royal Street will be closed to all traffic between Cameron Street and King Street starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, through 7 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. Drivers will be detoured to N. Pitt Street and N. Fairfax Street. Detour signs will be posted.
The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is responsible for the maintenance and repair of sidewalks, alleys, and more than 561 lane miles of road. The repaving, patching, sidewalk, and alley programs reflect our commitment to maintaining this infrastructure in good condition for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and all users to safely travel through the City.
Businesses and residents whose streets are scheduled for repaving receive advance notice – typically by displayed project signs and/or letters. Temporary “No Parking” signs will also be posted before work begins. Please be sure to observe these signs to avoid tickets and potential towing of vehicles.
While the federal government is shut down, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum (134 N. Royal Street) and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum (105–107 S. Fairfax Street) will continue operating on their “summer” schedules to provide additional options for visitors and furloughed workers.

Alexandria, VA– Alexandria’s City Council has advanced the City’s twin initiatives aiming to address housing affordability and equity: Zoning for Housing and Housing for All.
“Our city faces a critical shortage of homes, thanks to a history of housing policies that aimed to exclude people. We applaud the City’s efforts to confront and redress this history while increasing the number and variety of homes available across Alexandria.” said Luca Gattoni-Celli, founder of YIMBYs of Northern Virginia.
Alexandria, Virginia – October 31, 2022 – Local activists campaigning in support of nationwide universal health care (Medicare For All) received a significant boost earlier this month via a resolution of endorsement from the Alexandria Democratic Party.
Based on a similar resolution drafted by a coalition of activists from Grassroots Alexandria, Our Revolution Virginia, and the Democratic Socialists of America Northern Virginia Branch, the resolution calls for Congressional passage of the Medicare for All Act of 2021 (H.R. 1976) and State-Based Universal Health Care Act of 2021 (H.R. 3775) or similar legislation that guarantees health care coverage to all Americans.
