Alexandria’s gun-related crimes increased 100% from 2022 over 2021, according to a police report that will be presented to City Council next Tuesday.

The Alexandria Police Department released the city’s Part I (crimes against people) and Part II (nuisance crimes) statistics for 2022 this week, and included are the reported numbers of homicides, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults and more.

(Updated 2:15 p.m.) The Alexandria Police Department is responding to reports of a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo on the 3500 block of Mount Vernon Avenue in the Arlandria neighborhood.

Scanner traffic indicated the call for the robbery came in around 11:54 a.m. There were no injuries and no weapons reported in connection to the robbery.

A 47-year-old Alexandria man is out on bond after allegedly strangling his ex-girlfriend in her apartment last month, according to police.

The incident allegedly occurred at the victim’s apartment on Sunday, Feb. 12, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. The victim reported that the suspect allegedly strangled her inside of her apartment.

Alexandria’s DASH bus system has been going through a pair of ambitious, headline-grabbing overhauls, but city leaders are still working out how to pay for them.

In 2021, DASH went fully fare-free, meaning anyone could ride a DASH bus at any time without paying for a ticket. At the same time, the bus network has been undergoing a full-electric conversion, gradually swapping out all of the diesel buses for electric buses.
