Bad news for Alexandrians pining to dunk local politicians in the frigid depths of the dunking tank at the annual July 4 celebration in the city’s Rosemont neighborhood. Due to a construction project that will replace all exterior windows at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, the event has been canceled.
The celebration is traditionally held in the playground and athletic field area of the school.
Coming in just behind neighboring Arlington, Alexandria was ranked as the second best mid-sized cities for starting a post-college career, according to site CoworkingCafe.
The ranking looks at a variety of factors, from population with a bachelor’s degree, jobs for recent grads, and the local unemployment rate. On the financial side, the ranking includes median graduate income, cost of living vs national average, and what percent of jobs have employer-based health insurance coverage.
Come celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s War for Independence with renowned music historians David & Ginger Hildebrand for performances of special period music. The Hildebrands will don period attire to discuss and perform music associated with Alexandria’s sister cities: Caen, France; Dundee, Scotland; Helsingborg, Sweden; and Gyumri, Armenia. Scottish music was especially influential in the American colonies, and once the French joined the Revolutionary cause there were musical celebrations for Generals LaFayette, Rochambeau and other French leaders. There are more than 1,600 Old Town residents experiencing a power outage, and the Alexandria Police Department is directing traffic in Old Town North.
The outage comes after excessive rainfall earlier this afternoon.
