On This Day in Alexandria History — “On March 13, 1847, Alexandria was formally retroceded from the District of Columbia back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1801, the national capital was officially designated on lands donated by the states of Maryland and Virginia, with the small seaport communities of Georgetown, Maryland and Alexandria, Virginia included within the diamond-shaped, 100 mile square boundary of the new city.” [Historic Alexandria]

Silver Spring teen arrested for alleged gun brandishing in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood

An 18-year-old from Silver Spring, Md., was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) for allegedly brandishing a handgun in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

No one was seriously injured during the incident, which occurred in the 800 block of John Carlyle Street around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday. The victim told police that he did not know the suspect, who had pulled out a handgun and cocked it, according to an APD radio dispatch.

Snow underway following 80-degree days in Alexandria

After several days of warmer temperatures, Alexandria is experiencing weather whiplash as snow falls today (Thursday).

Rain has turned to a mix of snow and rain in the early afternoon. The National Weather Service says the brief snowfall could become heavy at times.

Despite School Board protest, City Council votes to change ACPS appropriation process

City Council ignored a plea from the School Board Tuesday night, unanimously approving a resolution to change how the city appropriates funding to Alexandria City Public Schools.

City Council’s resolution directs ACPS, in preparation for the Fiscal Year 2028 budget, to submit estimates for funds needed through major classifications instead of a lump sum. The School Board asked that the move, which was introduced at a March 4 joint work session with City Council, be postponed as it restricts the school system from redirecting budgeted funds to pay for programs and services.

UPDATE: Power restored after Old Town outage affecting nearly 2,000 residents

UPDATE at 5 p.m. — As of Thursday evening, Dominion Energy’s outage map is no longer showing outages in Old Town. 

Nearly 2,000 residents and businesses in Old Town were without power after an outage was reported just after 10 a.m. today (Thursday).

Private job losses tied to federal reductions pose concern in Alexandria, expert says

Private sector job losses linked to federal reductions and economic uncertainty are a top concern for City of Alexandria and its regional counterparts, according to a presentation given to City Council Tuesday.

The presentation, based on the DMV Monitor project created in partnership with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, looked at federal job losses under President Donald Trump’s administration, its ripple effect on the private sector and other regional economic trends.
