The family of a man who died in Alexandria Police Department custody last summer is asking for accountability, as the city’s Independent Community Policing Review Board has taken up the case.

The family of Allan Tucker II wants the two arresting officers and their supervisor charged with criminal negligence in his Aug. 15, 2025 death. The 32-year-old Tucker was arrested for public intoxication in the hallway of his apartment complex home and later died in police custody while waiting 35 to 45 minutes in the back of an APD cruiser parked in the sally port of the Alexandria jail.

Two restaurants with Alexandria ties have earned RAMMY awards from the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington.

Winners of the 44th Annual RAMMYs Awards were announced yesterday (Monday) at a gala at The Wharf’s Arena Stage in D.C. The 20 categories of the RAMMYS recognize the D.C. region’s chefs, restaurateurs and other industry professionals.

A CSX train commemorating America’s 250th birthday traveled through Alexandria to Washington, D.C. today (June 30).

The train features two America 250 locomotives, two heritage units in original 1827 Baltimore & Ohio colors, and 10 historic executive business cars used for presidential movements, according to CSX. It left Alexandria’s Union Station shortly after 11 a.m., crossing the CSX Long Bridge over the Potomac River and arriving at Union Station in D.C.

Over 1,100 bills made it out of the latest General Assembly session, and many will take effect Wednesday (July 1).

As Democrats gained a trifecta with the election of Gov. Abigail Spanberger and control of the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, legislators’ bills focused on priorities like immigration enforcement, gun control, housing and tenant protections, reproductive rights and more. Democrats also passed Virginia’s first-ever paid sick leave, paid family and medical leave, and child care assistance programs for workers.

Virginia Railway Express announced Monday (June 29) that it has bought a former freight yard in Alexandria as part of a service and fleet expansion.

VRE’s $35.8 million deal to buy the Seminary Yard (located near Duke Street and Interstate 495) from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority is part of a five-year, $155 million agreement to transfer four properties to VRE ownership. The former rail yard will be used for storage space for trains and equipment.

The hottest stretch of the year so far has arrived in Alexandria.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Extreme Heat Watch from Thursday morning through Friday evening. Under the Heat Advisory, the real-feel heat index values could reach 106 degrees. The heat index, a combination of high temperatures and humidity, could climb as high as 112 during the Extreme Heat Watch.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins announced her new initiative Art In Every Space, piloted yesterday (Monday), to bring art to more businesses in Alexandria.

The initiative places original artwork by Alexandria-area artists in local businesses at no cost to either the artists or businesses. According to the mayor, the initiative supports the work of Alexandria’s art organizations by providing additional locations for artists to display their work.

New Parking Meter Fees and Parking Fines Start July 1 — Starting July 1, Alexandria’s parking meter rates will increase to $2.75 per hour, and parking fines and citations will increase to $55 per violation. The rate changes apply to all metered parking spaces in the City of Alexandria Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Metered parking is free on Sundays and state holidays. [ALXnow]
