With fireworks, cupcakes and music, Alexandria celebrated its 273rd birthday on Sunday, July 10.
Thousands were in attendance for the free party, which also celebrates America’s birthday and was supposed to be held on Saturday (July 9), but was held off due to rain. What resulted was a less crowded event than years past — with performances by Town Crier Ben Fiore-Walker, Poet Laureate Zeina Azzam, and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO).
One year after her race against incumbent Mayor Justin Wilson, Annetta Catchings has been elected chair of the Alexandria Republican City Committee (ARCC).
A release from ARCC noted that Catchings is the first black woman elected to the position in ARCC.

The incident occurred sometime after 9 p.m. last night (Tuesday). Police said a man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The National Park Service (NPS) is soliciting public feedback for ideas to overhaul part of Daingerfield Island near Potomac Yard.
The idea is to revitalize the area around the Washington Sailing Marina at the former Indigo Landing Restaurant (1 Marina Drive).
Connecticut-based pizza shop Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana — aka Pepe’s Pizza — is planning to open in the Alexandria Commons Shopping Center (3231 Duke Street) next week.
The pizzeria announced in a release that the Alexandria location, the second in the region after one in Bethesda, Maryland, will open on Monday, July 18.
