In response to a series of federal worker layoffs spearheaded by Elon Musk’s DOGE, Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins said the city has put together a new webpage to support federal workers.

The page includes a “comprehensive guide for federal workers transitioning into new fields”, a list of available City of Alexandria jobs, and information about other emergency safety net services like child care, food and housing assistance.


The Virginia Department of Transportation could be bringing changes to S. Van Dorn Street in Franconia, just south Alexandria, including possible bicycle/pedestrian improvements.

A Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) study is set to complete next year and, as part of that study, VDOT is collecting feedback on what roadway improvements should prioritize.

After years of planning and construction, Alexandria’s Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Potomac Yard celebrated a grand opening today (Friday).

The Virginia Tech campus broke ground in 2021 and opened to students in January. A three-building campus is planned, with the first building coming online being an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot academic building that visitors toured today as part of the grand opening.


Today, Alexandria’s Market Square is an Old Town landmark, one that could become even better with a new planned overhaul, but that beauty belies a dark past a new grant could help uncover.

Beyond just being the center for one of the country’s oldest farmers’ market held continuously at the same site, Market Square was also deeply connected to the city’s history of slavery. A $75,000 Commonwealth History Fund grant from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (VMHC) will fund a research project to better explore and explain Market Square’s history.


A celebration of the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus opening today in Potomac Yard was derailed when protests started shortly after Governor Glenn Youngkin arrived.

Protestors stood from the audience and approached the stage singing “Ain’t Gonna Study War No More”.
