Storm damage closes roads, disrupts power in Alexandria

Alexandria is in recovery mode Saturday, working to restore electricity and clear debris after powerful thunderstorms hit the area Friday night.

At their peak, the storms knocked out power to over 16,000 Dominion Energy customers in Alexandria. As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 6,422 out of 70,258 Dominion Energy customers in the city were still without electricity.

City officials are asking residents to be careful, especially in the West End, where some traffic lights aren’t working. They’re reminding drivers to treat these intersections like four-way stops.

Alexandria is using social media to warn people to keep at least 30 feet away from fallen trees and power lines for safety reasons. They’re also encouraging residents to report outages by calling 866-DOM-HELP or using Dominion Energy’s apps and website.

Storm damage has forced the closure of several roads. Van Dorn Street between Holmes Run and Landmark is likely to be closed most of the day. The intersection of Juniper and North Jordan streets is also shut down due to a tree on power lines.

Alexandria Police say North Jordan is closed both ways between Juniper and Kemper. An arborist is there, waiting for Dominion Power before starting work.

City crews and utility workers are busy across Alexandria, cleaning up and working to get the power back on.
