After months of conversations, the Alexandria School Board will hold its first public hearing on proposed redistricting changes tonight (Monday, May 12).

Alexandria City Public Schools is proposing three different plans to handle increased capacity. The second and final public hearing on the matter will be held on June 5, and the Board is expected to make its final decision on June 12. The redistricting process is set to be fully implemented by August 2026.

The Alexandria City Council is considering a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, with a proposed two-year phase-out period for the community. The ordinance amendments will be first read during the May 13 legislative meeting, with a public hearing and final passage scheduled for May 17.

The proposed ban addresses noise pollution and environmental concerns associated with gas-powered leaf blowers. If approved, the ordinance would prohibit using gas-powered leaf blowers and leaf vacuums starting July 1, 2027.


Agenda Alexandria is gearing up for its May program, which will examine Alexandria’s elections past, present, and future.

The event, which will be held at 7 p.m. on May 19 at Virginia Theological Seminary, will be moderated by Michael Pope and feature a panel of experts, including Liz White, executive director of UpVote, Jeff Schapiro, longtime columnist with the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Scott Vierick, historian from the Alexandria Historical Society.

An Alexandria Police Department officer has been awarded full compensatory damages in his racial discrimination lawsuit against the city.

Delton Goodrum and his family erupted in tears of joy after the verdict was read. After a four-day-long trial before U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles, the jury deliberated for less than three hours to find that then-Police Chief Don Hayes, who is Black, racially discriminated against Goodrum, who is also Black, in his years-long bid to be promoted to Captain. The jury found that Goodrum’s rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 were violated and ordered that he be compensated $7.25 million, although awards in discrimination lawsuits under Title VII are capped at $300,000.

The PNC Alexandria Half Marathon‘s debut on April 27 brought nearly 5,800 participants to Old Town, raising over $20,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Alexandria.

This new event, which replaces the PNC Parkway Classic, included a half-marathon, 5K, and kids’ dash. Pacers Running organized the race, and PNC Bank was the main sponsor.


The Alexandria City Council is set to take the next steps in amending its noise ordinance to ban gas-powered leaf blowers.

The proposed changes will be introduced during the council’s May 13 legislative meeting and will move forward for further consideration.
