A 23-year-old man suspected of smashing the front window of a jewelry store on King Street in Old Town this morning (June 4) was arrested a half hour after the incident in the basement of nearby Christ Church.
The Alexandria Police Department was notified that a suspect in a mask and wearing all black smashed a front window to the jewelry store in the 600 block of King Street and fled the scene on foot, according to radio dispatches.
A 37-year-old Maryland man is being held without bond after allegedly brandishing a handgun in an apartment in the Taylor Run neighborhood, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
The suspect was arrested on April 5, soon after the victim reported that the father of her daughter took out a firearm, racked the slide and then pointed it at her and her son in the 2800 block of Seay Street, according to the affidavit. The suspect, a man from Landover, Md., was charged with being a violent felon in possession of a firearm, concealing a stolen firearm, two counts of reckless handling of a firearm, and two counts of brandishing a firearm.
Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) has proposed the conversion of parking spaces to a pocket park in the Del Ray neighborhood.
The proposed pocket park would be located on a current parking island at 3000 Fulton Street at the Clifford and Commonwealth Avenues intersection. The parking island provides space for about five to six standard passenger vehicles.
On This Day in Alexandria History — “On June 4, 1870, the Friendship Firehouse on South Alfred Street (built 1855) was reported to be in structurally unsound condition, requiring the removal of all fire equipment stored in the building. Although the building had only been constructed fifteen years earlier, the massive steeple that then topped the building was often battered by high winds, twisting the small structure below and allowing rain water to penetrate the roof and framing. This issue, coupled with deferred maintenance during the Civil War period, required that the tall steeple be replaced by a lower cupola instead. Although the new cupola was an improvement, twisting and weather infiltration continued to plague the building for decades, and was only rectified when the cupola was restored and strengthened by the City of Alexandria in 2010.” [Historic Alexandria]

The Alexandria Fire Department say there were no firefighter or resident injuries from a house fire in Del Ray Wednesday afternoon (June 3).
Around 3:05 p.m., AFD was dispatched to the 2600 block of E. Randolph Avenue. According to AFD, firefighters found the blaze in the backyard area that had extended into the home.
A courtyard at Alexandria City Public Schools’ Early Childhood Center is now named in honor of the principal’s late son.
ACPS held a naming ceremony Tuesday (June 2) for the courtyard at the Early Childhood Center (5651 Rayburn Avenue). The name “Owen’s Place” references Owen Michael Wagner, the late teenage son of the center’s first principal, Heidi Haggerty-Wagner.
The Virginia Education Association (VEA) has invalidated last month’s officer elections held by the local Alexandria teachers union and will oversee a new election.
In an email sent this week to members of the Education Association of Alexandria (EAA), VEA said that it conducted a review of its Alexandria affiliate to see “whether the recent EAA officer election complied with the legal requirements established under the federal Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.” The news comes after an EAA’s union officer election was postponed from May 18 to May 21, and EAA presidential candidate David Paladin-Fernandez was disqualified less than 12 hours before the election.
A drought watch with a call for voluntary water conservation has been issued for the D.C. region today (June 3).
The Metropolitan Council of Governments Drought Coordination Committee recommended the drought watch, which increases coordination, communications and monitoring of the water supply. Precipitation, groundwater levels, streamflow and reservoir levels are factors in COG’s decision to declare a drought watch.
