A hazardous materials spill onto Duke Street in the West End prompted a partial road closure and police and fire presence Monday morning.
Around 8:07 a.m., the Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Fire Department responded to a call in the 5300 block of Duke Street about white powder substance falling from a truck.
“The substance was determined to be caustic, but the exact product has not been identified at this time,” AFD spokesperson Taylor King said. “The source of the spill remains under investigation.”
Caustic substances are defined as those that can burn or corrode through living tissue.
At the scene, AFD’s hazardous materials team called for additional assistance from the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services around 8:49 a.m., according to radio traffic.
One westbound Duke Street is closed between Pickett Street and N. Paxton Street as units finish cleaning the roadway. APD advised drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
The Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate.
