Alexandria School Board approves $392.3 million budget for FY 2026

The Alexandria City School Board gave the green light to a $392.3 million Combined Funds Budget for the 2026 fiscal year during its school board meeting on Thursday (June 12.

The CF budget focuses on “improvements in staff compensation and benefits, increased key school-based staff positions, operations and safety enhancements, technology integration and funding to support redistricting efforts”, according to a press release from Alexandria City Public Schools.

Weather Alert: Flood Watch in effect for Alexandria

A Flood Watch is in effect for Alexandria and surrounding communities from Friday evening through late tonight (June 13).

The National Weather Service is warning of heavy rain and possible flash flooding across parts of Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

The Wall That Heals arrives in Alexandria for four-day exhibition

The Wall That Heals, a traveling three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, opened to the public Thursday (June 12) at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, marking a rare opportunity for local residents to experience the memorial outside its usual touring schedule.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) relocated several of its annual ceremonies from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to Alexandria due to logistical challenges posed by the scheduled military parade.

Alexandria celebrates Loving Day, honoring historic Civil Rights victory

The City of Alexandria took to Facebook on Thursday (June 12) to mark Loving Day, which celebrates the landmark Supreme Court decision that overturned bans on interracial marriage across the U.S.

The day commemorates Mildred and Richard Loving’s victory in the 1967 Loving v. Virginia case. The couple received news of the unanimous ruling in an Alexandria law office on N. Royal Street.

Alexandria Democratic Primary is Tuesday: Your guide to early voting, polling places, and what’s on the ballot

Alexandria voters have multiple options to cast their ballots in the upcoming Democratic Party Primary Election on Tuesday (June 17).

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, but voters don’t need to wait until Tuesday to participate. Early voting continues through Saturday, June 14, at 5 p.m.

Alexandria city staff is moving forward with plans to transition the Torpedo Factory Art Center to a new governance structure, with three organizations responding to a recently issued Request for Information (RFI).

Deputy City Manager Emily Baker provided this update to City Council during Tuesday’s legislative meeting, outlining progress on implementing recommendations from a stakeholder task force that worked on the issue in 2022 and 2023.
