The City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums will perform the final concert of their summer series Thursday evening (August 7) at Market Square.

The free performance is scheduled for 7:45-8:30 p.m. in front of Alexandria City Hall (301 King St). The event is open to the public.

Alexandria’s QuinTango will embark on a two-week European tour this month, performing six concerts across the Netherlands and Lithuania as part of their “Northern Nights & Tango Delights” tour.

The five-member tango ensemble will perform two local concerts before departing Aug. 17 for what marks their 12th international tour. QuinTango will play Friday at the Summer Passport Music Festival at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church, followed by a free performance Saturday at Lorton Workhouse Center as part of Fairfax County’s Mount Vernon Nights series.

Port City Brewing Company will host its second annual Port to Port Beer Festival on Aug. 16 from 12-4 p.m. at the brewery’s Alexandria location.

The festival will feature 19 breweries from across the United States and Germany, including international participants Radeberger from Radeberg, Germany, and Jackie O’s from Athens, Ohio. Local and regional favorites include The Veil from Richmond, Virginia, and Jailbreak Brewing from Laurel, Maryland.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct overnight maintenance on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Thursday (August 7) that will require multiple bridge openings and cause intermittent traffic delays.

The maintenance operation is scheduled from 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, through 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, weather permitting, VDOT announced Tuesday.

The Old Town North Alliance will transform the sidewalks and parking lots of Alexandria’s Arts & Cultural District into outdoor canvases during the second annual Chalk-A-Block festival on Sunday, Sept. 7.

The free, family-friendly event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature chalk artists creating temporary masterpieces throughout Old Town North. Attendees can follow Old Town North Tern footprints from site to site across eight locations, including Hotel AKA, West Elm, and the Sheraton Suites.

On this day in, 1950, Alexandria residents began complaining about a bad taste in the local drinking water. According to Historic Alexandria, “Alexandria Water Company soon officials determined the cause to be chemicals that had been dumped into a storm sewer by men at Cameron Station, the U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Depot. The affected water had to be drained from the water company’s reservoir and the City’s water supply was impacted for a week”.

An Alexandria police officer has been charged with reckless driving following a vehicle collision that occurred during a pursuit of a stolen vehicle in June.

Officer Damon Frazier was served a summons for reckless driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor, after the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney reviewed the June 14 incident, according to a Friday press release from the Alexandria Police Department.

The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce will host its 2025 Legislative Reception on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Alexandrian in Old Town Alexandria.

The annual event will bring together chamber members and guests with elected officials for networking in what organizers describe as a “relaxed and elegant setting.” The chamber will also release its 2026 Legislative Agenda during the reception.

Alexandria firefighters responded to an apartment fire Thursday evening in the 5400 block of Sheffield Court, according to Alexandria Firefighters Inc. IAFF Local 2141.

Engine and Truck 208 arrived first on scene and found smoke showing from a terrace-level apartment. Crews located a fire in the living room and successfully extinguished the blaze.
