The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct overnight maintenance on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Thursday (August 7) that will require multiple bridge openings and cause intermittent traffic delays.
The maintenance operation is scheduled from 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, through 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, weather permitting, VDOT announced Tuesday.
Motorists should expect multiple bridge openings during the seven-hour window, which will temporarily halt traffic on the Interstate 495 span connecting Virginia and Maryland over the Potomac River.
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge, built in 1961, underwent major reconstruction from 2000 to 2008; however, it still requires regular maintenance to ensure the safe operation of its drawbridge components.
Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes during the maintenance period. Real-time traffic updates will be available through VDOT’s 511 Virginia system and social media channels.
The maintenance is part of VDOT’s ongoing infrastructure preservation program across Northern Virginia’s transportation network.
