Alexandria, Northern Virginia and the rest of the D.C. region are under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at midnight tonight (Sunday).
The National Weather Service is predicting between 1-3 inches of snowfall in the region this weekend, starting tonight and lasting through early Sunday morning. The advisory will remain in effect through 10 a.m. Sunday.
NWS first issued an advisory at 7:51 a.m. before publishing an update at 9:38 a.m.
Precipitation may “briefly start as rain in some locations,” with a “narrow band of heavier snow” developing later this evening and overnight, according to NWS. It’s possible that some localities, particularly Baltimore and northeastern Maryland, could see as much as 4-5 inches of snow.
The city of Alexandria predicts slippery road conditions and recommends avoiding travel if possible. NWS advises travelers to slow down and use caution during inclement weather. Road conditions can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
Residents can stay up-to-date on the status of citywide roads and report roads with snow or ice problems using the SnowReport webpage. The city’s snowplow fleet conducted a “dry run” training earlier this month.
The city’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will remain open until 7 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16 due to predicted dangerously cold temperatures, according to an announcement.
The weather will also lead to some Alexandria leaf collection delays in Zones 3 and 5B, which will continue into next week, according to the city. The next passes for those areas will be announced by Tuesday, Dec. 16.
