Alexandria and other parts of the D.C. region will be under a freeze warning overnight into Tuesday.
After temperatures reached as high as 90 this past week, near-freezing conditions are expected in the early morning hours of Tuesday. During a freeze warning, forecasters encourage residents to take precautions to protect vulnerable plants and outdoor plumbing from freezing.
Alexandrians starting their gardening and other yard work may want to take precautions throughout the day and overnight.
The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning from midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday in Alexandria and surrounding areas. Forecasters say frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Alexandria and the rest of the D.C. region braced for severe thunderstorms today (Monday), but the tornado threat has declined. The National Weather Service has canceled the tornado watch for Alexandria as of 3:29 p.m. Monday.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center now expects a slight to enhanced risk level from storms in the region. That’s down from the moderate risk level predicted earlier.

Light snow is expected through the midday and afternoon, with the steadiest snowfall lasting through 5 p.m., according to NWS. As much as an inch of snow could accumulate at unpaved surfaces throughout the D.C. metro area, NWS said in a special weather statement issued this morning (Monday).
Wind gusts up to 60 mph could reach Alexandria this weekend as the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning in the region.
This weekend in the D.C. area is expected to be very windy and cold, with wind chills between 0 and 10 degrees below zero, according to NWS. The advisory warns of potential tree and power line damage as well as travel difficulties and hypothermia with exposure.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in Alexandria and the D.C. region this morning, advising of potential power outages and tree damage due to forecasted ice.
The warning, in effect from 11 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday, advises of heavy precipitation and as much as 14 inches in total sleet and snow accumulations across D.C., Northern Virginia and central, northeast and northern Maryland. It’s an elevation from NWS’ previous Winter Storm Watch in the area.
While a hill near the George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a well-known spot for sledding in Alexandria, the memorial’s grounds won’t be accessible during this weekend’s winter storm.
The grounds will be closed Sunday “for everyone’s safety,” said Shawn Eyer, a spokesperson for the site. That comes after resident Steve Adams tried to organize a snowball fight on the grounds Sunday morning.
Alexandria, Northern Virginia and the rest of the D.C. region are under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at midnight tonight (Sunday).
The National Weather Service is predicting between 1-3 inches of snowfall in the region this weekend, starting tonight and lasting through early Sunday morning. The advisory will remain in effect through 10 a.m. Sunday.
Following this morning’s wintry weather, the National Weather Service has issued another Winter Weather Advisory for Northern Virginia and the D.C. region.
The advisory goes into effect at 7 p.m. this evening (Friday) and will last until 1 a.m. Saturday, warning of freezing rain and drizzle, with a “light glaze of ice expected.”
The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for Alexandria and surrounding areas in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday.
Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will result in frost formation, according to the weather service.
