The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for Alexandria’s shoreline from midnight Saturday into early Monday morning.

Up to one foot of water above ground level is expected in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding, according to the advisory issued at 5:17 a.m. Saturday.

The Civil War Artillery Day at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled due to a rainy weather forecast.

The watch covers 22 counties in Virginia, including Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William, along with portions of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Meteorologists warn that scattered severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds throughout the afternoon and evening hours.

The watch is in effect from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., as a large storm with 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts has been reported in Centreville and is moving northeast.

Heat index values of up to 107 degrees are expected in the region, and the advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. The NWS has also issued a Flood Watch, which will be in effect from 3 p.m. into the evening.
