Freeze Warning follows elevated fire threat in Alexandria and D.C. region

Alexandrians starting their gardening and other yard work may want to take precautions throughout the day and overnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning from midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday in Alexandria and surrounding areas. Forecasters say frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

That follows an elevated fire threat in the region through Tuesday evening. Forecasters say low humidity, wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph and drying 10-hour fuels will increase the risk of wildfires spreading, particularly in the afternoon to early evening.

The National Weather Service urges caution with disposing of flammable items like smoking materials and recommends against parking vehicles on dry grass.

Overnight, temperatures could dip as low as 27 in Alexandria and other parts of the D.C. region. Residents can prepare by protecting tender plants and outdoor plumbing from the cold.
