Snow underway following 80-degree days in Alexandria

After several days of warmer temperatures, Alexandria is experiencing weather whiplash as snow falls today (Thursday).

Rain has turned to a mix of snow and rain in the early afternoon. The National Weather Service says the brief snowfall could become heavy at times.

Forecasters predict accumulations will be less than a half-inch, but the snow will mainly stick on grassy surfaces and not streets. If heavier rates occur, roads could become briefly slushy.

Snow will start to disappear in the region, from west to east between 1-4 p.m., the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang says. NWS has not anticipated any impacts to the evening commute.

“The precipitation should exit between 1 and 2 p.m. in our western areas, between 2 and 3 p.m. in the Beltway area, and by around 4 p.m. in our eastern areas,” the Capital Weather Gang says.

So far, March weather has been a mixed bag for Alexandria. The wintry precipitation follows temperatures reaching the 80s over the past two days before dipping early Thursday. More strong cold fronts will arrive on Friday and early next week with little to no precipitation expected, according to the NWS.
