Alexandria residents planning to celebrate Independence Day on the National Mall got some welcome news today: Metro will offer free fares on all Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess services starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 4th, until the system closes at 2 a.m.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the fare-free evening as part of its July 4th service plans, with Metro General Manager Randy Clarke calling it a fitting way to “celebrate America’s birthday on America’s Metro System.” For Alexandria commuters, this means free rides on the Blue and Yellow lines that serve the city, making it easier and more affordable to join the tens of thousands expected to gather for fireworks and festivities in downtown D.C.
Metro is also increasing service levels to rush-hour frequency during the afternoon to handle the expected crowds. The Blue line, which serves Alexandria through stations like King Street-Old Town and Braddock Road, will run trains every 10 minutes from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., compared to the usual 12-minute intervals. The Yellow line will maintain 6-minute service during peak evening hours.
Transit officials are warning travelers to expect significant crowds at Smithsonian Station, which may become so congested that trains bypass it entirely. Commuters are encouraged to use alternative stations like Federal Triangle, Metro Center, or L’Enfant Plaza, all within walking distance of the Mall. Metro also recommends staying on the same line when possible to avoid transfers and reduce crowding.
The free evening fares are available as Metro debuts special July 4th-wrapped trains and buses that will operate throughout the month. While no track work is scheduled for the holiday, bus riders should expect possible detours due to road closures in the vicinity of the celebration areas. Parking will also be free all day at Metro-owned facilities.
