A Fairfax County man is out on bond after allegedly abducting and sexually assaulting two women at the Braddock Road and Potomac Yard Metro stations last month.
Jeffrey Gary, 35, a Georgetown Law graduate, was employed as an assistant division chief by the Federal Communications Commission up until his June 1 arrest. He was released Friday (June 13) on four bonds totaling $14,000, according to court records.
Gary was arrested and charged with assault and battery, sexual battery, and two counts of abduction with force. Both incidents occurred on the evening of Friday, May 30.
According to APD:
On Friday at approximately 9:41 p.m., a woman in her mid-30s was walking in the 1100 block of Madison Street after exiting the Braddock Metro Station when she was approached from behind by the suspect. He grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground, attempting to restrain her. The victim bravely resisted, shoved the suspect away, and ran to safety before calling 911. No weapon was used in the assault.Alexandria officers responded swiftly and immediately launched a coordinated investigation with Metro Transit Police. Through the strategic use of technology, including APD Public Safety cameras, and close coordination with regional law enforcement partners, detectives were able to identify the suspect. With the assistance of Fairfax County Police, an early morning search warrant was executed, and Gary was taken into custody.
Alexandria Circuit Court Judge Katie Uston granted bail for Gary on condition that he remain on house arrest and wear a GPS ankle monitor, complete substance abuse and mental health evaluations, and stay away from the Braddock Road and Potomac Yard Metro stations. A public defender is representing Gary.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter said that his office strenuously objected to Gary’s release and is appealing the decision.
“The Commonwealth disagrees with the bail decision and is appealing the matter to the Court of Appeals,” Porter told ALXnow. “The defendant is presumed to be innocent, and the fact that he has been charged should not be taken as evidence that he is guilty. Given that the matter is pending, the Commonwealth cannot make further comment about the case.”
Gary is scheduled to appear in court on July 7.
