Alexandria Police arrest suspect in Metro station assaults

A 35-year-old man from Fairfax County is facing several charges linked to two separate assaults near Alexandria Metro stations last Friday evening (May 30).

Jeffrey Gary has been arrested and charged with assault and battery, sexual battery, and two counts of abduction with force, according to officials at a joint press conference on Monday.

Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire says Gary allegedly attacked a woman in her mid-30s close to the Braddock Metro Station around 9:41 p.m. Friday.

On Friday at approximately 9:41 p.m., a woman in her mid-30s was walking in the 1100 block of Madison Street after exiting the Braddock Metro Station when she was approached from behind by the suspect. He grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground, attempting to restrain her. The victim bravely resisted, shoved the suspect away, and ran to safety before calling 911. No weapon was used in the assault.
Alexandria officers responded swiftly and immediately launched a coordinated investigation with Metro Transit Police. Through the strategic use of technology, including APD Public Safety cameras, and close coordination with regional law enforcement partners, detectives were able to identify the suspect. With the assistance of Fairfax County Police, an early morning search warrant was executed, and Gary was taken into custody.

“Acts of violence —especially those targeting lawful abiding residents—leave a deep psychological impact on the community and are absolutely intolerable. To the victims, we offer our unwavering support: you are not alone. We commend the courage of those who have come forward, allowing us to remove a dangerous individual from our streets. To the person responsible, your actions were cowardly, and our pursuit of justice will be swift, focused, and unrelenting,” said Chief Tarrick McGuire.

Gary is currently being held without bond. A sexual assault advocate is working with the survivor throughout the legal process.

Investigators have confirmed that two separate encounters involving the suspect occurred on the same evening—one at the Potomac Yard Metro Station, and one near the Braddock Metro Station.
Between the two incidents, Jeffrey Gary now faces four charges:

Police are asking anyone who thinks they might have encountered Gary or experienced a similar incident to contact their local police department or call the Alexandria Sexual Assault Center’s 24/7 hotline at 703-683-7273.
