A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 53 years in prison for murdering his roommate by shooting him in the head as he left for work in the West End.

Dontae Lashaun Drumgold was convicted in May of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a murder in the 2022 death of 25-year-old Elijah Williams. On Thursday (Jan. 9), he was sentenced to 60 years for the first degree murder charge, with 10 years suspended, and three years for the use of a firearm charge. After his release he will undergo five years of supervised probation and must exhibit uniform good behavior for 10 years.

A man suffered a felonious assault is his apartment on New Year’s Eve in Alexandria’s West End.

The 38-year-old victim reported to police that he was physically assaulted in his apartment in the 300 block of S. Whiting Street by a man he knows. The victim was bleeding profusely from the face when he flagged down a police officer outside the apartment building, according to Alexandria Police Department dispatches.

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating the shooting of two men near the Winkler Botanical Preserve in the city’s West End on Thursday morning (Dec. 26).

APD was called at around 9 a.m. for a 19-year-old male suffering gunshot wounds to one of his legs and arms in the parking lot in the 5400 block of Roanoke Avenue. The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, and shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to radio dispatches.

After 15 years of teaching English at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), First Lady Jill Biden announced her retirement from her teaching post.

Jill Biden announced on Monday that she’d finished her final class at the Alexandria school the week before, NBC reported. Jill Biden started teaching at NOVA in 2009 after her husband Joe Biden became vice president. Jill Biden started teaching English in 1976.

The owners of Yami Buffett recently filed a special use permit application for change of ownership and increased seating at 555 S. Van Dorn Street. That’s the former longtime home of Red Lobster, which abruptly closed on Aug. 31.

There’s a new indoor gym in Alexandria’s West End dedicated to improving baseball and softball swings.

The Dugout, a 10,000-square-foot facility, recently opened for individual and group training at 315 Hooffs Run Road. It’s owned by Layla Burczak, Lacey Forster, Ben Kelley, Amanda Kelley, Ben Matthews and Katy Matthews — all principals in Alexandria Travel Sports LLC.
