The Alexandria Police Department is investigating the shooting of two men near the Winkler Botanical Preserve in the city’s West End on Thursday morning (Dec. 26).
APD was called at around 9 a.m. for a 19-year-old male suffering gunshot wounds to one of his legs and arms in the parking lot in the 5400 block of Roanoke Avenue. The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, and shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to radio dispatches.
Inova opened a new urgent care center in Alexandria’s West End on Monday (Dec. 23).
The Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care opened at 4600 Kenmore Avenue in the Seminary Plaza shopping center, and it’s the ninth center to open this year in Virginia.
There were no injuries after an apartment fire in Alexandria’s West End early Monday morning (Dec. 23).
The fire in the three-story apartment complex was called in at around 12:15 a.m., according to dispatch.
After 15 years of teaching English at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), First Lady Jill Biden announced her retirement from her teaching post.
Jill Biden announced on Monday that she’d finished her final class at the Alexandria school the week before, NBC reported. Jill Biden started teaching at NOVA in 2009 after her husband Joe Biden became vice president. Jill Biden started teaching English in 1976.
An “Asian and Japanese restaurant” wants to open in the former Red Lobster on S. Van Dorn Street.
The owners of Yami Buffett recently filed a special use permit application for change of ownership and increased seating at 555 S. Van Dorn Street. That’s the former longtime home of Red Lobster, which abruptly closed on Aug. 31.

There’s a new indoor gym in Alexandria’s West End dedicated to improving baseball and softball swings.
The Dugout, a 10,000-square-foot facility, recently opened for individual and group training at 315 Hooffs Run Road. It’s owned by Layla Burczak, Lacey Forster, Ben Kelley, Amanda Kelley, Ben Matthews and Katy Matthews — all principals in Alexandria Travel Sports LLC.
The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) warned locals today another West End raccoon has tested positive for rabies.
AHD said a raccoon tested positive near Chambliss Park after an encounter with several dogs near the park.
Alexandria’s Workforce Development Center (4850 Mark Center Drive, 8th floor) is hosting a pop-up event this week helping locals in need access business attire.
The pop-up will offer “gently used professional attire, business casual clothing, and accessories for men and women.”
A planning effort kicking off next year could determine the future of a major transit project in the West End.
Envision Route 7 is an ongoing plan to build a bus rapid transit (BRT) system connecting the Mark Center in Alexandria, through Bailey’s Crossroads and Falls Church, out to Tysons. An update headed to the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission tonight spells out some of what’s ahead for that plan in 2025.

A woman was uninjured in an attempted abduction Tuesday evening, and the Alexandria Police Department is asking the public for help.
The victim told police that she was able to break away after a man allegedly grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth and nose, and tried to pull her into the Holmes Run Trail at Tarleton Park, according to APD dispatches.
