A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection to an attempted bank robbery in Old Town on Tuesday, June 24.

Jonathan Levar Robinson has been charged as the suspect wearing a mask, entering the M&T Bank at 833 S. Washington Street, passing the teller a note and demanding cash, according to the Alexandria Police Department. The incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m.

After three years in a row of rising crime in Alexandria, it’s finally trending in the right direction.

Part 1 crimes, or crimes against people, include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. There were 1,133 total Part I incidents from Jan. 1 to April 30 this year, a decrease of 23%, according to the Alexandria Police Department Crime Dashboard.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) investigating a report of an armed robbery on the iconic cobble stone Captain’s Row in Old Town.

According to the scanner, a person called in around 1:20 p.m. saying they were just robbed at gunpoint at the intersection of Prince Street and S. Lee Street in Old Town, two blocks from the waterfront.

Alexandria’s crime stats for 2024 have been released, and the city’s Part 1 crime rate increased for the third consecutive year.

There was a 7% increase in Part 1 crimes, or crimes against people. Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. There were 4,733 Part 1 incidents in 2024, an increase of 7.3% over the 4,410 incidents reported in 2023, according to the city’s crime dashboard.

Alexandria experienced a nearly 13% rise in Part 1 crime so far this year, with larcenies jumping 23%.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is responding to a bank robbery at the PNC Bank (825 N Washington Street) in Old Town North.

A man walked into the bank sometime after 11 a.m. and handed the teller a note with a bomb threat, according to scanner traffic.

Police are investigating an attempted robbery at the Tobacco King (3104 Duke Street) last night (Monday) after an employee stared down a man with a gun and then chased him out of the store.

Surveillance video obtained by ALXnow showed a man entering the store around 9:35 p.m., inquiring about various brands, and then demanding that the cashier hand over the money. In the video, the cashier said he didn’t have cash and the robber threatened him with a gun.
