The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is celebrating Independence Day by going fare-free for the holiday.

On July 4th (Thursday) all Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess will be free after 5 p.m. The Metro system closes at midnight, but last train times vary by station.

A new rooftop bar called Good Fortune opened last week at Old Town’s brand new Hotel Heron (699 Prince Street) and it’s planning to capitalize on its scenic view with a 4th of July event.

The bar is hosting a party called “Red, White and Views” celebrating the new scenic view of the Potomac River and D.C.

The Juneteenth celebration is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. in Market Square.

Along with Pride Month celebrations, the City of Alexandria is also hosting a series of events celebrating Juneteenth, the annual holiday on June 19 that observes the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and officially proclaimed freedom for the remaining enslaved people in the state.

Alexandrians planning on driving this upcoming Memorial Day weekend may be relieved to hear that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is suspending highway work zones and lifting most lane closures for the upcoming weekend.

“VDOT will be suspending many highway work zones and lifting most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Friday, May 24, until noon on Tuesday, May 28,” VDOT said in a release.

Cinco de Mayo is, as the name suggests, this Sunday, May 5. The SoberRide program will start at noon on Sunday and continue until midnight.

Anyone who goes to City Council meetings knows there’s a long list of proclamations and recognition of various holidays, but there’s a new one on the docket for next week: Hazel the Tunnel Boring Machine Day.

A proclamation scheduled for the meeting on Tuesday, April 2, recognizes April 13 as a local celebration of the machine that did the heavy lifting for RiverRenew project.

Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is offering its SoberRide program again this year to offer an alternative to drinking and driving.

Anyone in the region out late on New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day in need of a ride home can get one through the 2023 Holiday SoberRide program. The program runs from 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 to 4 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1.
