Starting this month, Alexandria will begin eradicating invasive plants in the Wilkes Street Tunnel and at several city parks.

Residents and visitors can expect some temporary fencing around affected areas, as the city will be making herbicide treatments and other “control” methods. Some of the invasive species that will be eradicated include Japanese honeysuckle, tree of heaven, English ivy, mimosa trees, and Oriental bittersweet.

Housing Alexandria is hosting a “laid-back gala” next month with music, games and food.

This year, the annual fundraising event will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Garden Alexandria (5380 Eisenhower Avenue) and will celebrate the nonprofit’s completion of the Cardinal Path Homes project. Our top story is on the General Services Administration launching an official search for office space in Alexandria to relocate the National Science Foundation after the agency was displaced from its Eisenhower Avenue headquarters. In a presolicitation notice, GSA announced it needs between 240,000 and 280,000 square feet of Class A office space for a 48-month lease, with occupancy required by the end of November.

Get ready for some road repaving in Alexandria this month.

Three Alexandria roadways will be repaved from July 7 to 18, according to the city. The street repaving will affect Trinity Drive (from Fort Williams Parkway to Yale Drive), Canterbury Lane (from Trinity Drive to End) and Mill Road (from Mandeville Road to Eisenhower Avenue).

A former FedEx driver charged with grand larceny after more than $210,000 worth of cell phones were stolen from the company’s shipping facility in Alexandria admitted to his part in the scheme, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The thefts began in December 2024, and the phones were in several packages intended for the Verizon Wireless store in Springfield (6432 Springfield Plaza) and were stolen from the FedEx shipping center at 4720 Eisenhower Avenue.

A request to name a new street after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s childhood hometown in Kansas is heading to the Planning Commission tonight (June 23).

The new street name, Abilene Street, has been proposed for a new roadway that would run perpendicular to Eisenhower Avenue. It’s all part of the residential conversion approved last year for the former Victory Center property at 5001 Eisenhower Avenue.

After his motorcycle was stolen during a test drive, an Alexandria man tracked it down days later on Facebook Marketplace.

The incident occurred at the victim’s business in the 4900 block of Eisenhower Avenue on Thursday, March 20. The victim listed his blue 2004 Suzuki GSX-R9600 for sale on Facebook Marketplace, and the suspect reached out via Facebook Messenger and asked for a test drive, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. The suspect allegedly took the bike for a ride and never returned, and on March 25 the victim found the motorcycle listed in another Facebook Marketplace ad.

A bicyclist was struck and injured by a vehicle on Wednesday morning (April 9), and the Alexandria Police Department is asking for witnesses to come forward.

The incident occurred at around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Eisenhower Avenue and Metro Road near the Van Dorn Metro Station. The victim was struck by a Mazda CR-V and suffered a non-life-threatening facial injury, according to police.

A proposed 31-story tower in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood could become the tallest at-grade building in the city, according to a new report from the Washington Business Journal.

Aldie-based Red Fox Development Co. wants to build a 700,000-square-foot, 350-foot-tall residential-over-retail building at 2425 Mill Road.
