Statewide vaccine town hall tonight — “The Virginia Department of Health will host a live broadcast Town Hall on May 4, from 7 to 8 p.m. The program will feature in-depth discussion about COVID-19 vaccines and offer a forum to ask questions about the vaccines and the next steps in the vaccine roll out. Cuddly Coco needs a new cozy spot in Alexandria

Six-year-old Coco likes the simple things, like stuffed toys and treats. The six-year-old Staffordshire terrier is also looking to be adopted through the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“Coco is the cuddliest girl, with the most squishable face, and be ready for her to take her place of honor on your lap,” AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter told ALXnow. “Coco loves her people and wants to be the sole focus of their attention, so she would prefer to be your only pup to make sure she has all your love and snuggles.”

Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scammers — “If you receive a call from someone saying they are from the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (or any other law enforcement agency) and that you have to pay them money, hang up. Scammers will try a variety of approaches to intimidate and coerce people into giving them money. But actual sheriffs’ offices in Virginia will never call you and demand money.” [Twitter]

April 30 deadline for logo design contest for Alexandria City High School — “All ACPS currently enrolled students are invited to participate in a logo design contest to represent the new high school name Alexandria City High School. The deadline to submit an entry is April 30, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. See the complete competition guidelines and rules. Logo entries must be uploaded through the Logo Design Submission Form. Featured above are the previous logos used for T.C. Williams. More information about designs for Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School will be shared in the coming weeks.” [ACPS]

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria lets animals hang out in their offices

Chanel likes hanging out in an office more than her cage. Every day, she and about 10 other “office animals” are let out to play in offices at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“A shelter isn’t a natural environment for an animal,” AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter told ALXnow. “We’ve got seven dogs and three cats in offices right now, and we do whatever we can make this experience better and more comfortable for them.”

‘Dogs Of Del Ray’ mural to be finished next month

It’s no secret that Del Ray loves its dogs, and next month a new mural will be unveiled in their honor.

For the last month, local artist Patrick Kirwin has been working on the “Dogs Of Del Ray” mural, which is on the north side of Stomping Ground, facing the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square in the heart of Del Ray.

Aloysius Fraggleplank needs a little training, but the two-year-old blue pit bill is looking for a new home with a family that has adults and older kids.

While he’s usually known by the name Blue, Fraggleplank was recently renamed for one day only as part of an April Fools celebration by his minders at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria seeks public help to identify dead dog

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is trying to find out more about what happened to a dog found dead and wrapped in blankets off N. Armistead Street and Beauregard Street.

The AWLA is hoping to find more information about the owners of the dog to inform them of the dog’s death and to try to learn what happened to it.

Alexandria Police mourn loss of retired K-9 ‘Rocco’

Earlier today, the Alexandria Police Foundation announced the passing of one of the city’s retired police dogs.

According to the police foundation, a non-profit that helps care for retired police dogs among other services to Alexandria police, police K-9 Rocco worked with the Alexandria Police Department from 2011 to his retirement along with his handler Officer Wuckovich in 2018.
