Newly released census data shows that Alexandria is becoming more diverse, with white, non-Hispanic Alexandrians comprising less that half the city’s total population for the first time in recent history.

The census broke the categories down into several different sections. The data indicated that 76% of Alexandria identified as one race — a decline from 81.4% in 2020. White Alexandrians accounted for 53.5% of the population in 2010 and in 2020 comprised 49.2%. It marks the first time in any recent census data — at least as far back as the 1990s — that Alexandria has been has not been majority-white.

Hispanic or latino is marked as a separate category. The census data indicated that the hispanic/latino population in Alexandria increased by 30.4% from 2010 to 2020.

“Though many respondents expect to see a Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish category on the race question, this question is asked separately because people of Hispanic origin may be of any race(s),” the census website said. “The Census Bureau collects these data in accordance with the 1997 Office of Management and Budget standards on race and ethnicity.”

Alexandria isn’t alone in this: nationwide the census data indicates the country is becoming increasingly diverse. Nationwide, the 2020 census marked the first time the white, non-Hispanic percent of the population fell below 60%.

Overall, the city population increased by nearly 20,000 residents. The current total population is 159,467.

“The City gained 19,501 residents over the past decade with a 1.39% annual growth rate,” the city said.

Alexandria has counted 72.7% of residents for the 2020 Census, and with millions of federal funding on the line the city is asking for more participation.

“As a perspective for the city We’re at 72.7% for self response rate, which means we are beating the state average of 70.6%, as well as the national average of 66.2%,” City Councilman Canek Aguirre told Council on Tuesday night.

The City Council budgeted $80,000 to encourage residents to fill out the census, since the U.S. Census Bureau estimates a loss of $20,000 in federal funding per person left uncounted over the course of the decade. An accurate count helps get federal aid, redistrict jurisdictions, gather statistics for grant applications and apportion congressional seats.

On Thursday night, a federal judge ruled that the Census deadline, which was September 30, be extended to October 31.

“Please fill out your census,” Aguirre said. “It is safe, it is easy, it is fast. It takes about five to 10 minutes.”

By now, homes across the city have received forms and information regarding the 2020 Census.

An accurate count of residents helps Alexandria receive federal aid, redistrict jurisdictions, gather statistics for grant applications and apportion congressional seats.

The City Council budgeted $80,000 to get the word out to residents, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates $20,000 in federal funding in the city is lost with every person left uncounted over the course of 10 years.

According to the city:

The online Census form will be available in 12 languages other than English, and language guides are available for 60 languages.

The 2020 Census asks:

  1. How many people are living or staying in your home on April 1, 2020
  2. Whether the home is owned or rented
  3. Each person’s sex
  4. Each person’s age
  5. Each person’s race
  6. Whether each person is of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin
  7. The relationship of each person to the householder

Are You Ready To Be Counted?

The U.S. Census count is underway, the enormous effort happens once every 10 years to count every person living in the United States regardless of age or immigration status.

The census helps determine how much funding Fairfax County receives from money allocated by the federal government to improve transportation, provide education, healthcare, affordable housing and prepare for emergencies. It also determines how many representatives are sent to Richmond and Washington D.C to advocate for the county.

According to the Community Foundation of Northern Virginia, Fairfax County could lose $12,000 in potential funding over the course of a decade for each person who does not respond to the census.

In March, the U.S. Census Bureau began mailing every household an invitation to complete a simple questionnaire about who lives at their address on April 1. People can respond to the census online, by phone, or by mail.

The census will ask for names, age, sex, race and the relation of everyone living in each household. Federal law keeps those responses safe, secure and confidential.

Everyone should be counted to ensure Fairfax County receives its fair share of federal funds and representation.
