Another busy week in Alexandria.
There was a shooting last night in the Braddock neighborhood. Two men were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, one in critical condition. The other, 25-year-old Alexandria resident Kwakia Frazier, died today.

Local pickleball enthusiasts rejoice: DC Fray and Carlyle Crossing are hosting a pickleball party next week at Carlyle Plaza (2455 Mandeville Lane), though tickets to compete in the tournament have sold out.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

A documentary tracking the history of racism in Alexandria will make its debut at a screening tomorrow.
The film is Resolved: Never Again by documentary filmmaker Robin Hamilton. The 50-minute film explores “Alexandria’s history, from its role in the domestic slave trade to the lynchings of Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas, and the city’s ongoing efforts to confront this past.”

Come celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s War for Independence with renowned music historians David & Ginger Hildebrand for performances of special period music. The Hildebrands will don period attire to discuss and perform music associated with Alexandria’s sister cities: Caen, France; Dundee, Scotland; Helsingborg, Sweden; and Gyumri, Armenia. Scottish music was especially influential in the American colonies, and once the French joined the Revolutionary cause there were musical celebrations for Generals LaFayette, Rochambeau and other French leaders. This concert event is part of the “Alexandria commemorates America’s 250” campaign. David & Ginger specialize in researching, recording, and performing early American music. Since 1980 they have presented concerts and educational programs throughout the country and abroad at museums, historic sites, schools and universities. The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office is asking City Council for $150,000 to pay for the hiring bonuses of 15 new sworn deputies.
There’s a shortage of 22 sworn positions within ASO, and the office relies on retired deputies to fill in coverage gaps. City Council will review the proposal at its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Update 9/20 — One of the victims, 25-year-old Alexandria resident Kwakia Frazier, has died. Police also said a third person, a 15-year-old boy, was grazed by a bullet and received medical treatment at the scene.
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is responding to a shooting in the Braddock neighborhood.
The city issued a fraud alert yesterday after fake invoices were sent to customers using the Alexandria Permitting and Land Use System (APEX).
The city’s sent out an email on Wednesday (Sept. 18) stating that APEX users were being targeted. The city only allows permit applications through the system, and the city said that fake invoices are being mailed to customers.

Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark will break ground on Monday, Sept. 30.
Today the hospital system announced the groundbreaking for the 1.1 million-square-foot project located at the former Landmark Mall.
