George Wallace, a local author and former U.S. Navy Commander, is set to release his latest military thriller, “Cold Is the Deep,” on July 1, 2025.
The Alexandria writer’s novel is set in 1983, at the height of Cold War tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It centers on the discovery of a mole in the U.S. Navy, sparking a tense standoff between the two nuclear powers.
Alexandria leaders are praising NOVA Parks Executive Director Paul Gilbert, who recently announced that he will step down by December.
Gilbert has led the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority for 20 years. In Alexandria, his organization acquired the Winkler Botanical Preserve in 2022, and owns and operates Cameron Run Regional Park and Carlyle House Historic Park.

The City of Alexandria is seeking residents’ thoughts on planned upgrades to John Ewald Park, a nearly 4-acre green space located on the West End at 4452 Duke Street.
“The feedback collected will further inform the final Park Improvement Plan recommendations, scheduled for public hearing at the June 26 Park and Recreation Commission meeting,” the City says in a press release.
Alexandria resident and Cameron Station mother Katie Bilek has submitted the following Letter to the Editor regarding the Alexandria City School Board’s proposed redistricting plans.
Bilek argues that the plans unfairly target her neighborhood, Cameron Station, by arbitrarily dividing the planned community and redirecting half of its children from their walkable neighborhood school, Tucker Elementary, to Patrick Henry K-8.

Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation has just released their draft six- year improvement program for fiscal year 2026, totaling roughly $7 billion. The funds cover both operational costs and larger sums for capital improvement projects statewide.
The City of Alexandria, for example, will get money to help cover the $200,000 operational cost for their GO Alex program, which is the city’s outreach program to get residents to ride transit, carpool and commute by bicycle. Hampton Roads’ transportation department will receive funds towards replacing two large buses, a project that will total $1.6 million – and that’s just one of their more than 30 plus capital improvement projects. Localities depend on the state money to update the equipment used to serve the public in various regions of Virginia.
