The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria recently awarded $505,000 in first-year college scholarships to 181 T.C. High School seniors.

Although the annual Scholarship Fund Spring Gala was canceled due to COVID-19, just like the remainder of the school year, students were notified by email that they received the awards. The top prize of $40,000, however, was presented to T.C. senior Foziya Mohammed via Zoom by scholarship sponsors U.S. Sen. Mark Warner and his family.


There are now 983 probable and positive cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, an increase of 43 cases since yesterday. No new deaths have been reported for the third straight day, and fatalities from the virus remain at 26.

The latest fatalities in the city due to the virus were reported on Saturday, and were a man his his 50s and a man in his 70s, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Gabriel Pineda thought his Eagle Scout project was going to be easy, until he got to George Mason Elementary School and saw that the old ma of the United States painted on the blacktop that he remembered was completely gone.

At first, the 17-year-old wanted to do a touch-up project on the map he played on as a young boy, but it was removed when the playground was resurfaced a couple of years ago. Instead, Pineda decided to completely repaint the entire 35-foot square map from scratch.


Alexandria Police are considering the March 31 shooting of a 17-year-old to be a targeted attack.

On Tuesday, March 31, the victim was playing basketball with a number of other minors when he was shot in the back by an unknown suspect in the 300 block of Tancil Court in Old Town, according to a police search warrant affidavit.


Last month, Alexandria residents and city leaders honored the legacy of Joseph McCoy by placing a wreath at the location of his lynching at the corner of Cameron and Lee Streets in Old Town. Within 36 hours, that wreath was stolen, and on Saturday a group of determined residents placed a new wreath at the site.

“Mr. McCoy was killed, murdered, by the act of hate,” MacArthur Myers told ALXnow. “We can’t bring him back, but we can be a voice for him from now on. God has given us two powerful words to express emotion — hate and love. Let the healing begin with love, which is so much more powerful.”


There are now 940 probable and positive cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, an increase of 41 cases since yesterday.

While no new deaths have been announced, there have been COVID-19-related 26 deaths in Alexandria, the most recent of which were reported on Saturday and were a man his his 50s and a man in his 70s, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
