After decades at the corner of King and Washington Streets in Old Town, national retailers Banana Republic and Gap Outlet are closing their doors forever on January 24, 2021.

All merchandise is currently marked between 20% and 40% at Banana Republic (628 King Street), and up to 70% off at Gap Outlet (622 King Street).


The City of Alexandria is sending its Torpedo Factory plans into a public engagement phase that’s been decried by some city commissions as rushed.

The city is hosting virtual public meetings on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 10 at noon. Registration is required and each meeting is scheduled to last about an hour. Those wishing to speak on the plans can also do so at the Alexandria Commission for the Arts tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m.


(Updated 1:50 p.m.) Alexandria police officers responded to sounds of gunfire last night (Sunday) near the Braddock Road Metro found a man shot minutes later.

Residents who called police around 11:47 p.m. Sunday reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area of North West Street and Madison Street.

It was a clear and slightly brisk Saturday afternoon (Dec. 4) in Old Town for the Campagna Center’s 50th Scottish Christmas Walk Parade.

The parade, which was canceled last year due to the pandemic, is one of the most popular events in the city.


Alexandria police are investigating a possible home invasion robbery near Mark Center.

A woman reportedly told police she was tied up and robbed during an early morning home invasion on Saturday in the 1400 block of Catlin Lane. Police responded to her residence around 5:15 a.m. after she said she had been hog tied and robbed of her car and personal items by two men armed with a gun.


(Updated 9:10 p.m.) In a fairly sizable newsletter, city staff laid out a sort of “state of flooding” message that lays out the city’s response to recent flooding issues and a longer-term look at infrastructure work in progress and on the horizon.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities has announced a suite of winter activities for locals of all ages starting early next year.
